I actually had them edited to give me 100% realism at one point... until Sailor Steve mentioned that he only ever tweaked it up to 99% because, and I quote, "what if I lose my rudder, man?" And I thought to myself... what if I lose my rudder? And I tweaked it back down to 99%. :yeah: |
Oh you cheating buggers, I thought this forum was full of realism-to-the-max kaluens! :nope:
Which file is it? :D |
I think it's a section of the basic.cfg file.
I use one of the files in Commander to overwrite that section of the basic.cfg but I can't remember offhand which one it is. There's a file in Commander that's there just for that purpose if you want to use it - I think the default version of it makes no edits, but you can use it to overwrite sections of the basic.cfg each time you load the game via Commander. I use it to tweak the requirements for medals and badges too altho I haven't got that worked out to my satisfaction - next career will see some more experimentation with that as well. Is it 'static settings.cfg'? I think that's it. Look for it in your Commander folder. Anyway there's a section of the basic.cfg (game file) - I think that's the right file - that assigns a percentage to each realism option. Just scroll down the file, should be obvious which section it is. If you make any one option you always have checked worth 99%, you will always be playing at 99%. I think I have Limited Fuel at 99 and, since targeting assistance will prolly be the last thing to go for me, manual targeting (or whatever it's called) is worth 1. Everything else has a value of 0. So as long as I have Limited Fuel checked and leave manual targeting unchecked, the game shows me at 99% realism no matter what other options I select or deselect. Anyway I think that's how it works - it's not complicated once you find the right section to tweak, it'll be kinda obvious. But the total of all values you give to each option, must be 100 when you're finished! As noted I use that file in Commander to overwrite the game default, it has instructions at the top for how to make it overwrite only certain sections of the basic.cfg, you can even make different tweaks for different time periods if you like. |

I am usually somewhere in the high 70's. I don't mind the renown-hit since even a so-so Kaptain like me can bring home bigger tonnages than Gunther Prien.:smug:
Manual targeting on, W.O. assistance on - used only to identify targets, external camera on - only for sigh-seeing, stabilized view on - 'cause I can't use any of the RF's without it (and even then, the accuracy is dubious). Map contacts is also on although I do use the Realistic Contacts mod (it does not show any ships above a certain zoom level which really cuts down on the instant situational-awareness factor of the stock map view). The other reason I don't mind the renown hit is that I (cough - cough) pay myself back the renown that any major upgrade would cost me. Sorry, but I like to keep my medals and my rank. |

I set it that way because I play realistically in other areas http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=168479 . So while I edit my renown to get the max, I pretty much never use it. I always get bottom-of-the-barrel unqualified crew. Replacement crew come through SH3 Commander, so it doesn't matter one way or the other. The only equipment upgrade I've ever bought was the rotating hydrophone setup, and only because at a certain point they all had it. |
95% DID
Tweaked my files as well I like scoping out the boat and cant be bothered flicking through the recognition manual apart from that its a case of... "Whats going on up there?" or "Where the hell am I!" |
Call me a sissy if you like, but as I'm fairly new to this I'm playing currently on 52%. I have the map contacts on (and will continue to do so until I get the hang of range finding). I have WE assist off and manual TDC on. I do like the external camera though, I don't think I'll ever lose that- I like the feeling of being in an interactive movie. Plus I want to check out all the cool models!
|
I play around 90% . I have external camera for screenshots and contacts update since , well i just prefer it that way :)
Oh yeah, also every boat and upgrade costs 1 renown. |
I play with arpund 80%, with map contacts, and event camera (for screenshots)
|
I am playing "stock" SH3 (v1.4b) with 2 Careers.
One of them 100% Realism only for long weekends and holidays. The other one between 45-60% after work for quick patrols :) |

:rotfl2: What does that mean, anyway? Most of us encourage everyone to play the way that suits them best. The only time I ever get critical of someone is when they come around bragging about million-ton patrols, which they could only get playing on the easier levels. Easy levels: Cool. Bragging about how good you are while playing on the easy levels: Not so much. |
i played my last campaign at 87% or so and died 3 times. i just started another now that im better at IDing ships and basic tactics, at 100% DiD.
|
I play from 80% to 90%, with manual TDC off. I have tried manual TDC but most of the time I miss by a few seconds.
I also somtimes have external view just to get a good look at my u-boat :D. |
