Thanks for the compliment and info John. If enough people report that there are no fps drops, I will go ahead and remove the advisory statement(no sense making people think they can't get this mod just because they have an older system when it doesn't really have any negative effects)

Actually I've just tested this and for some reason my game drops to one or two FPS along with sluggish mouse response... Running an ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 4x anti-aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering. Normally runs at (I'm guessing) 20+ FPS.

Huh, that is weird, you even have a more advanced card than I do.:hmmm: Ah, I just took a look at my catalyst control center, and I have everything set to use application settings(except for adaptive anti aliasing, and catalyst AI). SH5 might be disagreeing with your graphics card settings, and when the higher res shadows are introduced the game engine can't handle it.

If you really want the better shadows, you could try running with your graphics card set like mine. Either way, I guess I will have to leave the advisory statement. Thanks for the feedback:salute:

Hmm, I'll check it out with app settings used.

EDIT: That was it! For some reason overriding the application settings caused the slow down, when switched to use app settings it runs smooth again.

Well I gave this a go, but it slows my ATI 4850 to a crawl.

Of course, SH5 has seemed a bit "odd" on my system from the get-go, so I can't say it's the mod's fault. I even have my Catalyst settings to "application settings" but no dice.

I have a Radeon 5770 and it kills my framerates. They drop down to 20ish and below when there are a few ships around me. Also even having just my ship around has lower framerates. The shadows look fantastic though.

I think there is a SH5 native BUG when adjusting some graphics effects.
I am running 1.5gig NVidia 465 GTX and my FPS is 100-120 all the time but when I start playing with graphics settings my FPS drops to 60 some times. I just reset the graphics setting to High and restart the game and try again. When I get it set right, my FPS is still 100-120 at all times.

nVidia GTX480 here and I have everything cranked to the max, screen res is 1920 X 1200, vertical sync enabled, and haven't noticed this native BUG. Game runs nice and smooth at 60fps (because of vertical sync).
@ TheBeast - you should try turning vsync on, it will help with 'tearing'. I see improved rendering when this is enabled.

I agree with TDW, I find that vsync helps a lot. But like I said though, what I had to do to make the shadows look better could very easily cause a frame rate drop, so I am not surprised. I am sorry to anyone who is having a hard time with this mod. I am working right now to reduce the strain this mod puts on your graphics card, while still giving you decent shadows.

However, the more testing I do, the more I am convinced that if you run your graphics card set to accept the application's settings, the better your comp. will handle this mod.

AHA! I just had a breakthrough, I was able to reduce the resolution of the shadows by 20%, but I was able to keep the same quality as my first release through adjusting different values. Hopefully I can reduce it even more, because if I can get the resolution low enough people should stop having any problems.:woot:

SteelViking 07-10-10 12:38 AM

Ok, several more hours of testing-adjusting-testing-adjusting got me to a 24% reduction in resolution for the shadows, without losing much quality on them(a tiny drop, but not much really).

I would really appreciate it if some of the folks who were having problems with the first release of this mod would try this, and see if it solves the problem.

The framerates are much better and it still looks great with the new version. Thanks.

Glad to hear it, hopefully this will work for everyone who has been having problems with this. Sadly, I cannot get the resolution any lower.

New version does indeed work better. No 1-2 fps slideshows! :salute: Now if I could just figure out why the game stutters I'd be in business.

SteelViking 07-17-10 07:58 PM

I am getting close to another release of this. I have been able to keep full quality on the shadows, while still keeping the resource usage at a low level.
