Turns out that manual targeting is actually the easy part.

The last thing I have to turn off is auto-map-update.

If you have to do your own map plotting, that is a big deal. You just can't go to the TDC anymore and dial in the torpedo with some lead and sink ships while you watch the little ship icons drive around on the map.

I'm at the same point. I still have map updates turrned on but I will probably never turn them off though.
My problem is the map update options are too extreme. With them on, you get god's eye view of everything. With them off, you the captain are doing every bit of the plotting.

I'll probably use the Assisted Plotting Mod. I've messed around with it a little bit and it looks like a good compromise.

:)

I'm still using the same techniques i learned from RockinRobbin's (Dick O'Kane Methods) tutorials done for both SH3 and SH4. They work well in SH5. The only thing i havent been able to do is Sonar only attacks, due to being unable to find range.

SONAR pings give you range

Yes, but in reality subs could not stop completely if it wanted to maintain depth control. And even if you are going less than 1 knot you can still mess up your speed measurement if you look too far to the side of your bow. This does not occur if the bow is (or stern) pointed towards the target and the periscope is at 0 (180) bearing.

NYGM simulates this very well (It gets irritating)
