The mere mention of "Channel" got me to thinking about minefields. A couple of days ago I slipped past a mine approx. 30km south of Dover on a routine hydrophone check. Gave me quite a shiver - the sub had missed it by 10 meters or so.

I've been through minefields where they were set at 25 metres so transitting at PD wasn't a problem but I've also seen them only a few metres below the surface which means any choppy weather conditions and your knackered even on the surface. Don't forget....the density of said minefield can also be a crucial factor that also needs taken into consideration. |
