I prefer SH3. SH4, especially with the U-Boat add-on, doesn't perform well on, "modest" equipment. I was using a 2.4 GHz dual-core Athlon, 4G memory, 7200 RPM HD, and a 512MB nVidia 7600GT. I've since replaced the 7600 with a 1G GTS250, but haven't tried it with anything other than the disappointing/disheartening SH5. Like, "someone else" on this thread, I'm about to reinstall my old copy of SH4. Will it work with Windows 7 64? Does anyone know if there'll be problems?

Sailor Steve 03-27-10 04:31 PM

"Modest" equipment, eh? I play it (when I can) on a five-year-old Pentium 4 3GHz single-core machine with 2 Gigs of RAM and a 256 card (upgraded from the original ATI 128). With both cards it runs very poorly, and that's with all the graphics stuff turned off! That said, I still played it right up to the day my computer went into storage - 8 FPS and all.

Now how's that for an understatement?? :hmmm:

As understatements go, it's very poor, as it's accurate in that there is nothing absolutely and completely game breaking.

I play SH4 UBM + OM, OMEGU etc. on a p4 3.00, 9500 gt and 2gb ram with maximum settings:up:

@Nisgeis
No pun intended, I cannot judge it for myself.

I'm reading all kind of experiences about SH5 and I'm trying to keep
a fair mind about the game.

Having said this, I find it hard to say that all the so far discovered issue's aren't game braking.
It would definitely spoil my joy over any game when I would encounter so many 'minor' bugs.
And that would be game breaking experience for me.

My suggestion would be for a beginning SH player:
Start with SH3 and when the time is there, proceed with SH4.
From there, read as many reviews possible about SH5 and decide for yourself if you are going to try SH5.

SH4 vanilla works in Win 7 64 bits. However installing process seem to randomly fail without explanation. Another attempt should fix it if not try compatibility mode Windows XP SP2.

EDIT: I have not tested it with mods yet but I don't believe that mods will break it.

alexradu89 03-27-10 05:22 PM

By the time he's finished with SH3 and SH4, SH5 will be patched, modded and up and running at Flank... I'm sorry Extreme Speed !:rotfl2::yeah:

Negativity spreads, that's a fact. Some people have a perverse definition of 'game breaking', for example. ZOMG The captin's hat is on at the wrong angle! Kriegsmarine officiers were required to wear their hats at 0.751 degrees, but in game it's clear that the hats are at 0.752 degrees!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??! How can UBI not kill everyone that ever worked for them and all of their families and all their friends?!?!?!???! I would kill them all if they worked for me!?!?!?!??! for this ATTROCITY! This GAME IS RUINED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!??!?!? !??!?!?!?

There are of course more extreme examples over even smaller stuff, with even less control over grammar and punctuation.

Enjoyment of game = Quality of game * ( 1 - probability of throwing toys out of pram for minor issues)

To quote Brass Eye, there's no real evidence for it, but it is scientific fact.

For clarity: Yes, I know they are called 'caps'. Just like that lock I see often.

Have you tried any of the super mods for SH3?

IanC 03-27-10 05:46 PM

For the pacific theater I recommend SH1, although I admit I only played stock SH4, maybe a fully super modded SH4 blows the doors off SH1, I dunno.
For the Atlantic it would be SH3 GWX or Aces of the Deep.

I see what you mean, but the issues I was thinking of are more in the
direction of strange AI actions in several situations,
targeting problems, FPS issues, crew moral, lack of damage control etc.

Those would be game braking issues (to me).

Historical incorrectness would be less disturbing for me, as long as it would
be kept into proportions (no GPS or cruise missiles please).

Nisgeis 03-27-10 05:59 PM

Sorry, what's an FSP issue? I think I should know this :).

Sailor Steve 03-27-10 06:02 PM

Frames Per Second.

The Enigma 03-27-10 06:05 PM

Auch, typo.
Changed it. Thanks Steve.

[EDIT]
I wrote FSP but intended to write FPS (Frames per Second)
