DRM is the large category of copy protection schemes called "digital rights management" which is what allows you to rent downloadable movies that automatically expire, share X amount of iTunes music, etc.
OSP is the name of the specific example of DRM that UBI is using with SH5 and AC2 games. The reason why the non-OSP version of SH5 doesn't update missions properly has to do with the fact that save game progress involves interacting with the OSP service to change some save game values. Note this has nothing to do with whether the "online saves" are used or not. Offline saves still require this OSP interaction. This interaction can fail for several reasons, including: 1. Read/write permissions too restrictive for the necessary file changes. May be caused by Vista/Win7's method of protecting user files. 2. Firewall or other selective connectivity program preventing necessary Internet traffic with the OSP service. Even if OSP appears to work enough to start the game, it might not work 100%. 3. Cracked versions of the game that bypasses OSP completely, preventing the necessary save game file interaction. |
