I can't remember how far I've made it into the war; I haven't been in the position to play a good dedicated campaign for several years. My current commander's going to make it, one way or the other, to the surrender in May of 1945 after having gone to sea in September 1939. I think they call it Contractual Immortality.

DID as a policy was something I swore off in the Aces of the Deep era, so I'll do what is necessary to keep the current man (and his crew, etc) alive, whether that means a dozen reloads of a single torpedo shot against an aggressive destroyer or outright hacking of renown counts to pay for an RWR or homing torpedoes the instant they're available.

It ain't necessarily honest, but hey, I want to see the end of the war in stock before I put GWX3 in.

I have made it to Spring 1942 on GWX.
I start every career in August 1939 with the hope of going all the way thru to 1945.
It is what keeps the game so fresh for me, the challenge of DID is the only way to play.
If I was to always get thru, it would never be as exciting.:yep:

I agree 100% ! .D.I.D adds a new level of tension to the game, even more so as you start getting attached to your UBoat and crew.
D.I.D is the only law out there, ignore it at your peril.

...i hate it i hate it i hate it!! :yep:

this crew i have now are getting very experienced - and its taken ages to get them there. i am at present in BF15 (1941 July) approaching a convoy. i am trying to be reeaally reeaally careful with them, as on my last patrol i lost three good crew on the bridge during an attack...it was my fault, i was careless and reckless: not so now!

careful planning - night attacks, long range eel shots - get the hell out of there!! (use external camera to see the pretty lights!)

I could survive the war on 100% realism sh3 vanila without to much trouble, but in GWX is harder. I remember my surrender in late 1943, when the task force simply gang my @ss :D.
The last log:
chief - Kapitän we taking damage battery down to 25%
Me -

ok, blow ballast
chief - wooot :o but... but we can`t surrender sir, we don`t have this option in the game.
Me - You filthy noob :stare: as soon as we reach surface i will exit the game and use commander options. Now Surface the damn boat.
chief - but we can`t surrender..... we are the master race :88)
me - Just shut up

chances to survive until the end of war in a type IX aren't as big as in a type VII, I heard.

"Uboat sunk by pressure."
Hunter Killer Group.
Tryed to max out my depth.
At 182 Meters "pop went the uboat".
(Bad dice roll).

I think the IXB is highly survivable.
In a IXC things get real scarey with aircraft.

Before Gray Wolves, any version, I never finished live careers because I was always stopping and rebuilding the game.
Since all GW I have finished
1 1944-45 career
2 1943-45 careers (one GWX2 the other GWX3)
1 GWX3 1939-45 career.

The hardest was the GWX2 43-45 one because I tripled the escorts for every convoy (some would be ringed 3 deep).
And, that was when I still had a spine and attacked convoys with a vengeance.
The other GWX3 43-45 had more escorts but not as many as in the GWX2.

The 39-45 whole war career was modified GWX3 but besides making all AS vessels 3 crew rated or higher I did not add near as many escorts.
My original thought was putting in what they really had but then in reality I would have help with wolf pack mates and we don't have that in SH3 so I backed down which gives me a better chance now.

Also from mid 43 I stay away from convoys except for long range latter torpedo shots and as soon as I fire I am about face at 60% and if I get a lucky hit I am somewhere away from the fish track.

I play 100% DID no excuses even unfair ones (war was not fair).

If it were easy I would have gotten bored and not be playing it (Like SH4)

GWX3 makes the sim no doubt.

I got up to 1944 before, but with copious reloads.

Currently I'm playing Playing GWX3 at 100% DiD and got to late 1940. With 1M tons of sunk allied shipping, I'm wondering how long until I can't rack up ludicrous tonnage any more.
I really want to ride this career home: sunk the Hood in Scapa Flow, bagged the Nelson in Gibraltar, sank more passenger liners than should exist in port raids (including a nail-biting episode in Dover where I missed the sub net on the way in and finding the way out with a dozen ships on my tail was a little tricky. No more port raids in a type IX!).

I played GWX year(s) back, but my PC screwed up, so I recently got back to it and started a new campaign
So far... see below, wish me luck its still early :D

HW3 03-25-10 07:06 PM

Currently playing WaW IV with GWX 3.0. I have made it from August 1939 to March 1944. I am using a type IXC.
Wish me luck.
