X-fi Extreme Gamer here. Seems to pretty popular card and so far haven't had problems but with one game.. which I can't remember it was, but anywho. :88)

I'm sick of shooter games. I bought this one, played it once and it sits on the desk. It has already been un-installed.:dead:

Tried it a bit, had sound with X-fi titanium fatality pro (did not but for the fatality nonsense, Have to point that out) and onboard Realtek... ALC889A I think.

Think i may have found the problem. COD5 doesn't like emulation. The instructions i found said to look for

"\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\C ontrol\MediaResources\DirectSound\Device Presence"

And change emulated value from 1 to 0.

Looked around some more and found another post buried in some obscure messageboard in a thread that no longer freaking existed but in google cache that said to look for EVERY INSTANCE of "device presence". Just looked in regedit on my work machine, and sure enough there are 2 or 3 more "emulated" values that exist (at least here). Which would explain why even after editing the one regester value, my dxdiag still said emulated. I didn't get ALL the values. Can't wait to try this out at home and see if it works.

Hopefully it works.

Thats gotta be it. It struck me odd that the soundcard was being listed as emulate in DXDiag. Doing a sound test it was cut short. But since every other game iinstalled works without hitch, i didn't think much of it.

CO5 is different in that they used alot of newer stuff in it, trying to be cutting edge. Did some more research, and ive even got links for updating the openAL drivers, and an SB audigy support pack/driver update by a 3rd party. SImilar in vain to omega drivers guess.

Ok. Got it to work.
The part in blue from here is the key.

I tried all the fixes on the net such as setting sound to 48khz and disabling unimodem half duplex in device manager etc. Anyways, none of these supposed fixes worked for me and many others. I have tried so many things to get this game working which you would not believe.
Last night I had a flash of inspiration. I checked dxdiag which showed my sound card as emulated! That can't be right I thougt, so I went about researching the net and found the following;

The solution lay in a very old WinXp problem. Winxp and 2k incorrectly set the drivers to EMULATED. The trouble is, it's what directsound uses to remember whether it's hardware or software, and my dxdiag thought I had no hardware buffer.

Try start-run-dxdiag[enter] and look at the "sound" or "sound1" tab. If it says the device is EMULATED then this may work for you, it worked for me.

The only way to fix it is to do a regedit (Start-run "regedit"[enter]
and search (Ctrl+F) for every instance of the entry "Device Presence".
Once there, in each one there should have some or all of the following:

(Default)
Emulated
VxD
WDM

Anyways, in most of these in my registry, VxD and WDM were set to 0, and emulated was set to 1. I modified the values so Emulated read 0 and VxD and WDM read as 1. Do this for every entry, by right clicking on the value and editing. Naturally it may be wise to keep a note of original settings on each (some will be 1,0,0 others will be 1,1,1 - was for me anyway) just incase something borks and you need to reset them.

You will have to re-run DXDIAG (start-run "dxdiag"[enter]) and set the hardware accelleration back to full and test it.

To clarify, change
VxD
WDM

To 1 if they are set at 0. Changing just the emulated regester to off (0) grayed out hardware acceleration in DXdiag and i had no sound card listed in dxdiag. One set of entries had VxD and WDM set at 0. Setting these to 1 fixed that. Sucker runs like a champ now.

Glad to hear you got it figured. :salute:

Call of Duty - WAW - Profile Backup

Hi,

I still play COD WAW every so often...Problem I have is all the hackers and cheats that seem to figure a way around Punkbuster. Anyway, there is a program available to backup your profile in that game just incase your 'puter has the big melt down. I back it up and save the file on an external. If anyone is interested, i'll send info. on it. Also, I had sound issues and the way i fixed it (after much screwing around) is I simply did a system restore back a few days. Fixes it everytime...Seems to be a vista issue as well. Later all.:woot:
