Although I make my home in the US most of the year I am from Canada.. we only have 4 as well. 70's/80's vintage ex-Upholder Class subs, now called Victoria Class.

One is operational, two were expected to be in service by late '09 but I haven't heard anything and the fourth is still undergoing a major overhaul after a fire happened onboard on the way back to Canada after receiving the ship in the UK. One sailor died (Lt(N) Chris Saunders) and the boat had to be sealifted back to Canada on a Norwegian ship. It is expected to re-enter service in 2012.

Maybe you folks down under should have bought a couple of Kilos! I mean even Iran is able to keep atleast one of those operational!

Australia did look at buying the Upholder subs, as well as a modified version. The RAN went with the collins class instead
