If so, I would assume it to be likely that thanks to the inconsistent way in which the piracy at Somalia is adressed (or better: not adressed), the example of the somali pirates has spread. And why not if these pirates show the world since 18 months that their business model works so well. Success triggers copying, doesn't it.
Piracy has always been across the globe and will always be across the globe no msteer what happens or doesn't happen in Somalia, theonly reson you link Somalia with recent piracy is because of the recent headlines.
All the time it was going on off W.Africa , the China sea and S. America not a whisper ...but now its just the somalis that must be the prime example.

pirates in Baltic Sea :arrgh!:, not for the last 6-700 years or more....
Even if you discount privateering you are several hundred years out, piracy in the Baltic didn't die out after the big guild wars

But not in the North Sea and English channel in modern times. Trying hard not to see that, eh? The English channel is not the street of Malacca.

Of course you are right , Antwerp is not on the north sea and 2006 is not modern times which is why a bulk freighter was not involved in a pirate boarding in Feb. 2006 .
Its lucky Liverpool isn't on the North sea or the attempted act of piracy on another bulk freighter in July 2007 would be even more modern.
Though on to other european waters....its lucky Corsica isn't in the straights of Malacca as otherwise pirates would have been doing pirate stuff there in Dec.2008.

Thanks for putting me right as my ignorance might lead me to make simple mistakes when the relevant information is so very easily accesible.

Do they know if it is still afloat?

nikimcbee 08-12-09 07:14 PM

After closer inspection of the evidence, we found: Ferret fur, an empty bag of ferret snacks, a copy of "Play Ferret" with the centerfold missing, and an empty bottle of Finlandia.

Yes, dear?

Trollman, since you are so clever to find relevant information yourself while it is so very easily accessible, will you please check with the Münchner Rück insurance company (the world's greatest of its kind and the major player in it's field) and their statistics on global patterns and numbers of acts of piracy in the various regions of the globe.

And when you find then "piracy in the Northsea" comparing to the piracy being found offcoast of Nigeria, Somalia, or the street of Malakka until some years ago, and other more exotic places as well that are not the Baltic or the Northsea, you could come back again: but I fear that - as usual - you will anyway.

BTW, the piracy at Malacca has significantly declined and last year was almost non-existent. Because it was actively and aggressively fought against by the military in the years before. Says not me - but says the statistics.

What exactly do the Somalis and the Straight of Malacca have to do with the disapearance of a ship in European Waters?

Did they manage somehow to get from east africa to the baltic sea? One would imagine, it would make headlines if some try to travel that kind of distance in a 'thing' that is hardly bigger then a row boat.

OneToughHerring 08-12-09 09:45 PM

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, the ship was owned by a Finnish company although the crew is Russian. The whole shipping business in the Baltic Sea is quite shady should I say, lots of criminal and semi-criminal stuff going on like pollution of the waters, smuggling etc.

Thomen 08-12-09 10:14 PM

Now, I do not know the particulars about the waters around Oland, but thats an interesting course the ship sailed...

Above is the AIS snippet from the early 24th to around 4PM, the day the boarding incident is said to have occured.

Ah so now its a comparrison of levels of piracy.
Well done you have looked up some sources.
Pity you didn't do that before you wrote....

You were clearly in too much of a hurry to attack my post and decided to just go off on one without getting your facts straight.
