Its lucky Liverpool isn't on the North sea or the attempted act of piracy on another bulk freighter in July 2007 would be even more modern. Though on to other european waters....its lucky Corsica isn't in the straights of Malacca as otherwise pirates would have been doing pirate stuff there in Dec.2008. Quote:

Do they know if it is still afloat?

After closer inspection of the evidence, we found: Ferret fur, an empty bag of ferret snacks, a copy of "Play Ferret" with the centerfold missing, and an empty bottle of Finlandia.

Trollman, since you are so clever to find relevant information yourself while it is so very easily accessible, will you please check with the Münchner Rück insurance company (the world's greatest of its kind and the major player in it's field) and their statistics on global patterns and numbers of acts of piracy in the various regions of the globe.
And when you find then "piracy in the Northsea" comparing to the piracy being found offcoast of Nigeria, Somalia, or the street of Malakka until some years ago, and other more exotic places as well that are not the Baltic or the Northsea, you could come back again: but I fear that - as usual - you will anyway. BTW, the piracy at Malacca has significantly declined and last year was almost non-existent. Because it was actively and aggressively fought against by the military in the years before. Says not me - but says the statistics. |
What exactly do the Somalis and the Straight of Malacca have to do with the disapearance of a ship in European Waters?
Did they manage somehow to get from east africa to the baltic sea? One would imagine, it would make headlines if some try to travel that kind of distance in a 'thing' that is hardly bigger then a row boat. |
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, the ship was owned by a Finnish company although the crew is Russian. The whole shipping business in the Baltic Sea is quite shady should I say, lots of criminal and semi-criminal stuff going on like pollution of the waters, smuggling etc.

Now, I do not know the particulars about the waters around Oland, but thats an interesting course the ship sailed...
