as i said sometime, u-boats better hull and dive deep, US fleet boats better endurance and electronics

Yeah...I was thinking the same thing. Except for the very early period in the war before radar was fitted on all US subs you usually have ample long range warning of anything in the area leaving you plenty of time to dive. Plus, the Japanese didn't have radar detectors until late in the conflict so you can use it with impunity.

But if you were caught on the surface in a fleet boat it would still take forever to get below the surface, and when you did, you couldn't go nearly as far down as a u-boat.

But the point here was that a fleet boat couldn't be caught in that situation, because it had no external reserves.

I don't recall reading about any u-boats getting caught while reloading externals, but I admit my reading on u-boats in general is somewhat less than I'd like.

Anybody have any historical information in that department?

Never really looked at it from that perspective, but looking at the large number that were actually caught on the surface I think it reasonable to presume that some must/may have been replenishing from external canisters :hmmm:

True enough, Those that got caught in the midst of loading externals, probably didn't live to tell about it

I've done some reading and from what i've interpreted, after allied ASW aircraft and naval vessels were equipped with radar the U-boat waffe gave up on even equipping boats with external loadouts before they left port. Before that SOP was calm seas and winds, after night fall.:yep:

I would like to see a mod that would make it like the guns in bad weather that, you can't load external torps in bad weather.

Would eliminate the temptation. :haha:

Can it be done ?

That would be very cool indeed and I for one would love to see a mod like that.. What is the gun mod you speak of ?? any links ??

Sailor Steve 03-24-09 03:00 PM

In the stock game you couldn't use the guns in winds higher than 7 m/s. Some mods raised that to 11 m/s. If you are using GWX you already have it.

The downside is that your bridge crew will not be wearing their oilskins unless it's raining or extremely high winds.

Yes, it would be nice if torpedo transfers could be limited the same way, but for now all we can to is limit ourselves.

Are you guys aware that they also didn't reload internal torps in high waves either? Also not usually in combat, as the diving angles used in dodging depth charges made it unhealthy to be handling more that a ton of steel with an explosive nose. You waited until the combat was over and then you dove deep to avoid any unpleasant motion while you were doing it.

@ Sailor Steve.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that crews could not load internally while in incliment weather. As far as being under attack i personally never reload when being DC, makes too much noise.

FIREWALL 03-24-09 03:11 PM

Someone on the GWX Team knows how to do it. :yep:

All we have to do is ask. And. I'm asking.

Oneshot/Onekill 03-27-09 03:20 PM

Still asking?
