While i share your interest in space exploration BG "in our lifetimes" might be a bit ambitious I think given that even if a colonist ship left earth right now it'd take many decades just to reach the nearest star, let alone locate a suitable planet to inhabit. It's possible that we might see permanent outposts on the moon or other planets in the solar system.
I'm afraid however that we're going to have to get over our objections to mandatory birth control. Because if we don't we're eventually going to experience a massive die off, whether its through the effects of global warming or simply outstripping our ability to feed ourselves, that might even be big enough to drive us to extinction.
