@AVGWarhawk: Right after posting I learned that the sub is not named after the mobster, and edited my post accordingly.

Here's something on the correct Salvatore Todaro in case anyone is interested:

He was a Regia Marina sub skipper during World war 2. Apparently he sunk four ships during his career(details here, select his name from the drop-down menu) and survived the war.

Here's an article on the Italian submarine Cappellini, which he commanded during several war patrols
