And yes, it is an interesting read. The problem I see with scapegoating Palin is that it might backfire big time. I think it is safe to assume that she has more "fans" then McCain does. |

Witht the way the electoral demographic is shifting, I can't see Palin winning the Presidency.
The nomination, probably. Her main skill as a candiodate is generating enthusiasm in the Republican base. But this base has been getting smaller and smaller, and Sarah Palin has demonstrated that she cannot win swing voters. |

That said, hey, if Obama screws up really badly (funny how I'm talking about him as already having been elected... but I digress), who knows - there might be a backlash and that particular side might garner more sympathy (or perhaps more accurately, Obama falling flat might dampen the liberals but energize the conservatives - and as always, an election is about being able to mobilize a support base). |

I mean, if you would have told me in July that McCain was going to pick her as his VP I would have looked at you blankly, figured out who she was, and then I wouldn't have stopped laughing at you for a while. Predicting politics/politicians is often like predicting the weather. Yes there is some data to go by, but it can still (and often does) really surprise you how things turn out. PD |

Ah, and Thomen: I am no Obama supporter. ;) I would not vote for him, and thinlk life with him will be more dofficult for us europeans, than with McCain. I've read a German essay that the Russian analysts and politicians also fear Obama more than McCain, who more falls into the familiar cold war schemes they know from the past. If Obama gets elected, many people in europe sooner or later will rub their eyes. Many illusions there are on how less "America first" he is. As for the Russian political class, he reminds them to much of Kennedy and his determined aggressive patriotism, and Kuba certainly was as little a pleasant experience for them as was the massive arming program launched under Kennedy. |

Let me ask you, if you were in a room with Palin (or Bush, FTM), do you think you could hold your own? |

Firstly I will put on the record that Palin isn't my cup of tea at all but I'm not going to denigrate the woman.
Four years is a long time in politics and you never know what may happen. Palin may gain the experience and credentials required to run for the job. Good luck to her. No one thought Reagan had the attributes to be a future President in his younger years. |

Anything's possible. We voted for Chairman Rudd here, and the ALP had had 4 or 5 leaders in the preceding few years. its a bloody long time in politics! |

A snapshot of the attitudes on her: Quickvote Do you think Sarah Palin will be elected U.S. president in the future? Yes 10% 1995 No 90% 18474 Total Votes: 20469 source: CNN (at the time of this posting). Why GWB was elected at least could be explained to some degree. but if Palin ever becomes president by elections, I will give up all hope that is left for America, and turn my back on it, for that event would be sufficient evidence that it's people have gone completely nuts. If after reunification of Germany, Germans would not have kicked out the SED, but would have elected a stupid nonsens-babbler like Honecker as first chancellor of the reunited German republic, you would have said the same about Germans, right? |
