Black Swan while trying to get into a convoy. I was concentrating on the target rather than the situation and the next thing I heard was 'destroyer in attack run'.

Since we started gwixing, Balz been balzing around. But never got beyond early 42 due to upgrades. Right now in late 1940. :|\\

Air raid. I was in Paris on leave at the time.

Historical sinkings (I've only just been bothered to do the Maths) in the North Atlantic were by the following:
Surface Vessels 275 (42.4%)
Aircraft 237 (36.6%)
Submarine 25 (4%)
Mines 34 (5%)
Accidents/Unknown 77 (12%)
For a total of 648 (100%)

So hopefully our poll will reflect these %

We seam to lack aircraft sinkings.
Is everyone playing in 1940?

nirwana 09-28-08 02:36 AM

Meh we are too smart to run surfaced at daytime in areas where the damned hurricanes get us too easily 8P...

Sailor Steve 09-28-08 03:17 PM

I haven't died in more than two years.

Of course I haven't played a career in more than two years...

I've been found in Lock Ewe by in-patrol destroyers (2+aswTrawler)

Sensekhmet 09-28-08 05:17 PM

For some reason, I never found aircraft to be that much of a hassle. Sure, they pop up sometimes but they usually miss or barely scratch me, then continue strafing. So far I've been sunk by a/c once, heavily damaged once (aborted patrol and sailed back home), I shot down one Kingfisher and one Sutherland, it's February of 1944, still in my creaking old IXB decked out with two twin 20mm and a twin 37mm.

Unlikely, we in SH3 seem to respect air power a lot more than the real world captains. Afterall, we have the benefit of hintsight.:ping:

My thoughts too. :hmm:

My last sinking was in Narvik in 1940 by destroyers after sinking the Nelson. Got the Oak Leaves added to my Knights Cross.....posthumously.

Bronzewing 09-29-08 09:14 AM

Last time I bought it on patrol was rather embarrassing. Running surfaced at slow ahead in thick fog south of Ireland my boat got rammed in the starboard side of the engine room by a small oil tanker and broke up. Only other time was a direct bomb hit from aircraft. Never been sunk by a destroyer, though been badly damaged by a few.

Erich dem Roten 09-29-08 06:51 PM

I never stick around long enough for aircraft anymore. Like I've seen others mention, I had that itch to try shooting one down...after all, I was shooting 10+ planes down in stock SH3, how hard could it be?

First try with GWX: Kingfisher bracketed me, killing all three flak gunners and damaging the watchtower.:nope:

Now I crash dive and cut the rudder hard in whichever direction is closest to my fingers.

I do enjoy harbor raiding though; I like to plan my attacks and have a lot of fun waiting for night so I can slip in and back out before getting pinned down. Not having any depth makes the rewards risky, but worthwhile.

Amasingly ive only seen two aircraft in this campagine when raceing to beat the Warspite to Narvik and I got out after over a hour, and went to narvik base. Got DC for quite some time, also was in shallow waters.;) As of now, Im in mid 1940.:D
