This thread is full of win on a subject of fail. So many great posts.
My sister was actually interested in Spore, but decided not to purchase it because of all the horrible reviews about the DRM stuff. I think my favs are on amazon. It's hilarious that a popular site for ordering stuff online has this game rated so badly by so many people. EA needs to get their **** together. It's absolutely pathetic that a game many people have been excited about for a long time is being given bad reviews and heralded as a POS mostly because of the DRM. If I worked on the game, I would be pissed. I don't really buy games or hardly anything off of ebay. So I don't know if that's a second hand sales problem. Honestly, I don't see the point in making so many customers angry just to stick it to a few individuals. And remember folks, sharing is caring. When I was growing up, many kids borrowed and even traded video games with each other. If we had to deal with stuff like this, I don't think that would be possible. What is the big deal man. The person who wants to buy the game is going to buy the game. The person who doesn't/can't buy the game 'will not' buy the game. I guess a few too many people are ruining it for the rest of us. Then again, there's that conspiracy about the concentrated effort to kill pc gaming. Quote:
If only there could be a sweet compromise. Something so elegant and simple. Something that gives the businessmen peace of mind and doesn't bother customers. |
The harder and more annoying they make the DRMS and Copy protection only will cause that the piracy in games will rise.
especialy when a DRM/Copy protection may cause damage or slow downs on the users Computer. HunterICX |
Unfortunately it's the trend these days. First Bioshock, Mass Effect, and now we get this ****ery. The good thing is that like every other trend, it will end one day. But a lot of things will have turned for the worse until that.
I think what happened is that the businesspeople (not the software people!) have realized that in order to further maximize their profits, they absolutely have to stop people using illegit copies. And if the last two decades have taught us something, the only way to stop it is to add copy protection that leaves absolutely no way around. So much for theory. So the clerks made sure the software people have to add copy protection, though they probably told them it would never work. Did your boss ever come up with some really stupid idea, and when you told him it's stupid he made it clear he still wants you to do it? In the end you just say wtf. And so they come up with all kind of **** to please the suits, and we can all see it's not working: They are about to merrily **** up the reputation of the gaming industry and the pc as a gaming platform. You know what, I am beginning to not care anymore either. Quote:
I'm so sick and tired that I'd actually like to see forums devoted to small and independent games only. So I could turn my back on mainstream publishing for good, like I did some years ago to Hollywood cinema. Needless to say I got neither Bioshock nor Mass Effect nor does this Spore interest me anymore. |

DRM is not about piracy. It is about total control on what customers BUY.
Every single corporation has seen the digital revolution as an opportunity to enforce once and for all a rental-type economy. Where customers will NEVER EVER OWN anything "intangibile" anymore. And the gateway to achieve this is DRM. Piracy is just a scapegoat to thrust DRM down our throats and to "corrupt" politicians in enforcing even more draconian copyright laws. From this point of view the pirates are actually doing something good, they are raising general awareness of this DRM bull**** and the price that society will have to pay if we go down this path. It doesn't matter that what they are doing is "illegal". Sometimes choosing the right thing to do is illegal. |

Looks like EA is going to modify Spore's DRM...
Looks like EA is going to modify Spore's DRM. Apparently you will now be able to deactivate a computer and get that install back. There is no date given, but in the near future they will be releasing a patch that includes a tool of some sort. While not a lot better than before (if at all) I think it is a step in a promising direction (notice I didn't say right direction). I still detest the idea of install limits, albeit even if you can get them back. That still means you have to be connected to the Internet and I know some people don't have their gaming rigs online. It only makes sense really, and if I had a "beater" computer to take online, I wouldn't have my good one online. Anyway, here are a few sites that talk about the DRM modification.

Same again as with Mass Effect: We were going to give you 3 activations but after the negative feedback we are now going to give you 5! Aren't we awesome?
The only good news about this is that there are probably discussions at EA itself. Now do the only right thing: don't buy the software until it can be installed an unlimited number of times and give them a good rant at places where it matters, like amazon. |
Well case in point, Halo just recieved a no cd patch with the latest official patch.
I like that game, having played it 2 times on the xbox and at least 6 times on the pc. Its a guilty pleasure of mine, even though I don't like fps in general. But Halo is just to funny, great acting, great cinematics, great sense of story, etc... By EA's policy I should have buyed the game at least 2-3 times. :rotfl: While EA customers will wonder wether they will still play the game in the following years I will continue to engoy Halo. No restrictions whatsoever etc... Its surprising that Microsoft acted this way, its a first for them. Well all I can say is kudos  to MS. Lets hope its not an isolated experiment. |
I've got 4 words for everybody here...
Don't copy that Floppy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xfqkdh5Js4 Anybody familiar with this? Maybe EA should bring back DCTF for the current generation. Educate some kids with super def rhymes and phat dance moves. This is all so surreal. I'm scared of what the future holds. EA secretly wants to be like that corporation from the Robocop movies. edit. lol wtf is that picture under my name |
I think it's pretty hilarious that people are only now figuring out that partnering with EA = siginifigant decrease in product quality. :) Pandemic Studios fell for their pandering too, of course, no one ever accused Pandemic of being a paticularly intelligent bunch of dudes.

|
The game is already cracked. For the mods? I'm sure there are sites posting the big mods.:hmm:
