I own a big 'coffee-table book' called The Home Planet. It has dozens of very large photos of Earth taken from space, interspersed with quotes from people who've been there. At least one Muslim astronaut came back a changed man, saying things like "I looked for the borders between my country and Israel, and I realized there aren't any."

On the other hand I haven't read about any of those guys becoming crusaders for peace.

Well it was the ballistic missile technology that fueled the early space race between the US and the Soviet Union.

Up until Saturn all our boosters were also military rockets. Vanguard was an oddity since it was built by the NRL.

If you can put something in to orbit you can bring something down from orbit or sub orbit right where you want it to land. :yep:

It was a comment about Werner Von Braun's dream of reaching space. Well he did reach space... on the way to London....:dead:

Well he reached spaceish.

The boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and "space" is, by agreement, defined by the Karman Line which is at 100KM or 62.1 miles. This definition is the one recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which is an international standard setting and record-keeping body for aeronautics and astronautics.

The V2 rocket operated at an altitude of 83 to 93 KM or 52 to 60 miles

So Werner baby was close but no schnitzel. :nope:

Trivia question.

Given the definition that space "starts" at 100 km

What was the first rocket to go higher than 100 km? :know:

If it reassures you, think of it the McCain way : more cell phones, more stupid car accidents, less evil Iranians to threaten the oh so free world :know:

How many times has the US launched a communications satellite and the world speculates that it's something else? It works both ways. Of course no one is going to advertise that they are launching anything but a communications satellite.

That was exactly the point of my post, there's everything but speculation in this thread.

Point taken:D I read the part about "would it not be from Iran" wrong perhaps?

Jimbuna 08-26-08 11:48 AM

Early launch tests.....it is obviously going to be used for anti-shipping purposes :hmm:
