Several years ago. I caught a hispanic fellow stealing my extension ladder right out of my yard in broad daylight. I let my Rottie out of the basement to scare the crap out of him then I locked the gate and called the police. When they showed up after their coffe and donut break the officer was asking the man what he was intending to do with the ladder. The Mexican replied, " I was not stealing it, just think of it as changing hands." Well off to jail he went, and the officer told me that what they find is that the mexicans think they have entitlement to what we have here in California because it once belonged to mexico. Maybe that is how the russinas feel about Georgia.

How come you keep referring to NATO like you weren't a part of it? Aren't you French?

I don't mean anything bad, it's just interesting this ability for people, Europeans especially, to act like their government is some kind of independent entity completely separate from the people.

That could be said for us, too. (Thought I'd say it before anyone else did:D)

Yeah i've seen signs of that kind of thinking over here but not anywhere near to the degree that Europeans have polished the concept.

Speaking as a brit, when you have government like the blair/brown monkey-show, this is hardly a concept we have to make much effort at understanding.

I think you'll find many of us brittishers wholeheartedly believe that our government is looking out for itself and the vested interests of big business, whilst the 'electorate' are merely viewed as batteries for the economy, ready to prop up the latest in a long line of bad fiscal initiatives.

That, honestly, sounds like most Governments are.

Yeah but who makes up the government if not the people they govern? It's not like a nobility system where only those born in certain families can work for the government is it?

I dont know about UK, they are kind of feodal still, we dont have that.

Jimbuna 08-22-08 12:57 PM

Under the curent electoral system used in the UK, a minority of people vote for a government and give them the ability to govern over the majority.

Apathy is one of the few growth industries left in the UK :nope:

I might beg to differ with the idea that anyone can be elected to the highest offices in government. Check out what is spent buying the presidency or a seat in Congress.
