I will be doing the best I can to make a Japanese Campaign and that's all I can do. So far the reception has been poor to say the least, so I may be doing this for nothing. On the initial announcement, we only had two comments, one wanted to know if you could play surface ships and the other wanted to know if we would have Japanese faces. I think Japanese voices would be great too, but I don't happen to speak Japanese. So I will do the best I can to find "non-copyrighted" voices. There is a lot to doing a campaign and I had a start but had to convert it to the German side because of the subs. So it's one step at a time. This is my first attempt at something like this and I have a lot to learn and a lot of files to work on. If you choose not to play it, that is totally up to you. Peabody |
I haven't heard from Zaza in a long while, he was the one who set me up with the Jyunsen B in the first place, he's from Sapporo japan, I'll try and reach him through facedbook or hotmail.
he could help us although he already told me that WWII japanese and current japanese are two different laguages, they don't use the same words etc.. anymore. He had a hard time at times understanding the 1942 submarine movie he sent me, a propaganda movie called Go-Chin which takes place in a Kaidai submarine. I have a copy I could post for anyone willing to make the voices mod. I guess we could use the sounds and voices from that movie, there being no copyright after that long, and you get the images to understand what they say so what to tape ? I think, like Takao's names and rank mod, that a japanese language mod would be a plus for purists, but even I have a hard time with only the ranks sometimes... The faces will come last I think, I don't have much time to devote to that now, so that part may take a while.. Keltos german movie of Jyunsen A modified : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KjpOS8rjVio |
@peabody: I understand your resentment, I know that this is a spoiled community. If you followed the last activities concerning my mods you might have noticed that I often lament how it is not fun to slave away for nothing and never get any useful comments.
Concerning copyrights of japanese voiceovers like STW, you're probably right, it was just some weird idea: Take some nice japanese wav's and don't care if they are proper translations. Not knowing very much about japanese I understand that it is a tough problem you have at hand. I still strongly urge you to get some of these games (the STW demo might still be around, CFS2 also comes to mind) and hope you share my feeling that a japanese campaign ultimately needs japanese voices and faces. A more constructive idea would be finding some japanese subsim member who can at least find a warmovie for us and maybe someone else will find a way to get the voices into the game. Let me say again that I am really looking forward to your mod, I'd really love to play for the japanese, with or without faces / voices. And that I share your resentment that it is hard to get support on these boards, but I dont know what can be done about it. |
And here some sources that could be helpful:
Biggest database of public domain movies / resources, lots about WWII: http://www.archive.org Altavista has a search for sound files: http://de.altavista.com/audio 1942 IJN song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuQ-G...eature=related |

And I do understand wanting Japanese voices and faces, I want them too. But right now there are issues with finding files and things to actually get this to a Beta release stage. I am having a few problems finding where some stuff gets loaded from, I even found the startup logo for Silent Hunter 3, so that and the fact that I found medals in six different locations leads me to believe that there are a lot of SH3 files still hanging around in here. In fact I have an issue right now where the "Imperial" dials are not getting loaded, only the 'metric' which is a choice in the options. The metric is (I think) the correct for Japan??? But I want to change the speeds from German to Japanese and that is when I noticed that I have "Imperial" selected but they are not the ones getting loaded. As for the voices, I think I can get them in, and I do have some software to edit with, but it's a matter of which ones are getting loaded, so I don't waste time editing the wrong ones. The main issue being the fact that I have very little knowledge of the German side of the game, since I started without it and like the "Fleet Boats" and just never used the Uboats. I have also noticed at least from the Career standpoint that some things are done different on the German side. In some cases a different folder structure, and different files for some information. Well, to make a long story short, as they say. At the moment there are some "more important issues" and issues that are easier to fix than working with sounds and faces. Hopefully it will all come together, but right now I want to consentrate on getting a release that is playable, then see how many are actually interested and add improvements. And I have to learn as I go. Even if there are no comments, it's fairly easy to tell how 'popular' it is, just look at the number of downloads and then make improvements and check the number again. If the number is 2 then we know:rotfl:. Thanks for the sources too, I will check them out. Peabody |
Sure just trying to help. I have spend some time looking for japanese language resources for you that in the public domain and I already see it's difficult. I found tons of small videos on youtube, but they're often just propaganda films with cheesy music or some short newsreels like this one about the death of Isoroku Yamamoto (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTCXi...eature=related) , ( another example here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIPj-...eature=related ), so I see that this can only be done with the help of someone from Japan.
Let me reiterate that if there are very little comments it doesnt mean there is no interest, on the contrary. Small mods just get flooded away from the front page and that makes it hard, you have my sympathy. Having an option to play the Japanese is definitely very high on my list! |

BTW, in terms of mission assignments, etc. You can go to combinedfleet.com and look at the submarine TROMs.
Then you'll know exactly where the subs when, and possibly what they were doing at the time. tater |
Thanks Tater I'll check it out.
