I live in Volos and Athens is about 330km away, so I think I'm going there next week. I've been in Athens many times and haven't visited the Averof.

"Μέγα το της θαλάσσης κράτος"
"Great is the country that controls the sea" Its a real beauty, from long gone days. But isnt her Name BN Averof? Because at that Time it was the Royal Navy (Βασιλικόν Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ). Just asking. |
HRS-HS

After 1975 this has changed to HS=Hellenic Ship (ΠΝ in greek). AVEROF is considered "ACTIVE" and has complement XO and Captain so it now called HS AVEROF and not HRS AVEROF. |
Technically I think it should be VP Georgios Averof or just Georgios Averof with no prefix (Greek today doesn't use prefixes (HS is an external prefix), but they used the VP prefix when it was the Kingdom of Greece, I think)

If we want to be totally correct (and a bit pedantic :p ) we should call her Θ/K Γεώργιος Αβέρωφ (Θωρηκτό/Καταδρομικό Γεώργιος Αβέρωφ). Θωρηκτό stands for Battleship and Καταδρομικό stands for Cruiser. In reality Averof (let's skip the prefixes for a bit) was an Armored Cruiser but since it was by far the largest and most powerful ship in the Greek Navy (and probably in the Eastern Mediteranean) at the time the Greeks called it Battleship (although it was not).
It is true that the terms HRN and HN are not used in Greece and they are used by the RN (Royal Navy) in reference to a Greek Ship. |
Hint: Could it be Alexandria or could it be Port Said http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/181...kbigsw1yo4.gif
You'll have to work the dates out yourself http://imgcash3.imageshack.us/img412...uplargeon1.gif |

Elli, the first Greek casualty in the Greek-Italian war, they sank her even before the war had started.

Yes, she was sunk by an Italian submarine while she was stationed at the island of Tynos. Judging from the picture i think she was a V&W class.:hmm:
Can anyone verify this? Lets see what we can do without the recognition manual...;) |
