You don't _need_ it. You can manually make backups of all modified files, copy and overwrite the existing game files, reinstall the whole game when you install a mod wrong, and generally get so frustrated at the whole thing that you end up being thrown in jail after you throw the computer out the window and accidentally kill the neighbors.
Or you could use JSGME. Your choice.
JSGME makes it very easy to install and uninstall mods. It will automatically make backups of the modified files, and generally keep you a lot calmer. It's very easy to install a mod, try it out, uninstall the mod, and move on to try another. It will warn you if you're about to overwrite a file from another mod. It'll make bacon for you in the morning.* It'll give you a list of mods you have installed, it'll take a snapshot of the game files, so you can later check what has changed, etc.
Yeah. I guess you really do need it.
