No no, in SH4 refit means only ammo, fuel and torpedoes. No repairs are made. To get repairs and new gadgets you have to end the patrol.

Untrue. You will receive equipment and bulkhead repairs but hull damage will not be repaired.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. I thought it was just refuel and torps.

Aha, so you mean destroyed equipment is repaired when refitting? That's new to me, been too careful so far

Yeah, like batteries, pumps, engines, periscopes, etc. Holes in the hull remain until you begin a new patrol. I learned all this during mod testing.

How is expecting your sailors to take a hell of a beating and then go get a quick "refit" and go right back out to sea without any kind of break?

but thats just it, the game doesnt reflect you having to go in for repairs at all. unless im missing something, the only option the game gives me is to end my career not the patrol.

thats just my point, you cant go into port to call it quits because the game will not let you.

im not wanting to be invincable but rather have the game reflect that if a boat is not ready to return to sea then the game should stop your capaign due to battle damage.

my wish is one of two results:

1 - lose a large amount of renown because you allowed yourself to be damaged and compress time to reflect you were out of the war for a moth or two before returning to active duty.

2 - something like a death screen to stop the game because you are too damaged to return to sea and you lose renown because you were damaged.

my frustration is that i dont think you should be allowed to rearm when you are not fit for duty, but if you are going to be allowed to rearm then it should also make your ship fit for duty.

Interesting. Even without any mods, I get repaired.

yes that is what i am talking about, i play stock sh4 1.5 ubm with no mods and hull damage never gets repaired in port.

damage above the waterline (bullet holes in deck plates and conning tower) should get repaired by your crew while in port.

not all damage is repairable and i dont expect it to be but minor hull damage should be repaired, as it stands the only remedy i have found is a new career.

No hull damage gets repaired regardless of how minor the damage. Unfortunately in reality a Dry Dock is required to make those kinds of repairs. If you want, I can make a small mod so just your hull doesn't get damaged at all. Everything else will remain the same.

well for me personally im not that interested in using a mod to remove hull damage from happening but i think a mod like that would be very good when learning evasion so you can practice without dying until you get good at it.

but i would like to occassionally play with a mod to reduce the damage levels for smaller weapons like machine guns.

That can be done too. Using the Silent Editor, just open the .zon files in the Submarine folders. Open the file of the sub you wish to edit. Within each selection is a damage zone labeled as a sphere or box. All you need to do is edit the ArmorLevel in each sphere and box selection. If you exceed 100, the armor becomes impervious to all weapons fire. Armor with a 100 rating can still be damaged, but small rounds fire will do virtually no damage to the hull so long as it isn't excessive.

it has been since sh3 and gwx1.1 the last time i did any real modding attempts so just how detailed can you get with that?

can you say make just the attack periscope 10% tougher to damage without effecting anything else?

Yes. I had a periscope problem at one time but after some trial and error, I was able to figure out the mechanics behind it.

i realize ship repairs take time but if i come into port needing serious repair i wont turn around and go back out on patrol when a bird taking a dump on me will sink me lol.

if my ship is no longer seaworthy then i should be able to make the repairs if i spend enough time in port but no repairs are even attempted, why?

is there a way to reset the hull damage when you refit?

.................................................. ..................................................
I had a patrol recently where, after surfacing from 160 ft(daylight) I sustained 'hull damage'. This 'damage' was a great big hole on the port side just under the bridge, I could actually see fittinfgs etc inside as well as sloshing water.
Where from, I know not, there was'nt any jap air about, anyway I decided to return to Midway, repaired & refitted and turned to resume my patrol area. 'But' the Damn hole was still there!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saved the game, restarted and Lo! it had gone, but my crew weren't able to make any repair of the hole!!

steinbeck....:hmm:

I have sustained some pretty heavy damage, but I have never had to start a new career to continue playing. If my pressure hull is damaged, the crew may be able to get it repaired enough to make it back to the closest port for refueling so I can make it back to my home port (IF, and only IF, I don't have to dive beyond periscope depth).

Once refueled, I can usually make it back to my home port where I 'End Patrol'. My boat then goes into drydock (supposedly), and major damage is repaired. I'm then given orders, and continue my career with my next patrol.

When I start a patrol, I chart my way to my patrol area, then SAVEGAME before I even get started. I also SAVEGAME as soon as I am in the clear and on the surface after every successful attack (just a safety in case the game CTDs, I don't lose my entire patrol). Very useful in case of a disaster! Also, when starting a new patrol after sustaining heavy damage, a wise skipper would make a number of test dives as soon as he makes open ocean. CRASH DIVE to 160', check the boat for soundness, then take it down, 10' at a time at 1/3 ahead, until you either get to your test depth, or the boat starts leaking. THEN you know your boat is safe.

well thanks to everyones help i came to realize i was very confused and incorrectly thinking i should be able to dock at any friendly port to get repairs.

i have been playing silent hunter for years but without a lot of spare time to play i only played the single missions so this campaign stuff is all new to me getting refitted and docking and all.

i finally figured it out that you can only get boat repairs and or end your patrols from pearl.

all other friendly ports just rearm and refuel your boat.

1 last question if you will - am i guessing correctly that any port you select to use as your home port would allow you to dock and make repairs the same way you do at pearl or is pearl the only repair dock?
