I'd be very interested in knowing what people think.

I'll tell you what I think.
5 years have passed, but still Time compression affects detection.
Today's example:
I was DCed by DD, finally he was off me, going away slowly.
He was about 1000 yds away/ I was at FULL STOP.
I've turned on the time compression, for about x64.
And that DD immediately turned around and sunk me with first depth charge.
How do you like that? I was at full stop!

I'm curious how to set the RPM's so I can keep them under 100 on the F2 screen, I have never seen that option listed under keyboard commands. (as suggested previously in this thread)

I know how to set my speed to "x" knots etc, but never to control the rpm's.

Would someone mind clarifying that?

IIRC I used to drag the hand/pointer on the RPM dial manually.

go thru the strait on the African side where it is deep. do so on slow two speed to avoid wake. be heavy with deck awash. torps set shallow for escorts. be at dark night only on surface to save oxygen and battery time if necessary. if spotted, maintain course very close to coast - escort may ground on shore. when escort closes within 1500 yards begin turn directly toward it head-on-use deck gun if possible then submerge to periscope while increasing speed to flank. hold scope zeroed on escorts bow, firing at 500 yards.(bungo straight style?) if it hits-good- if not, go to 200 metres, set speed level one with silent running and turn 90 degrees for la spezia. do not waste compressed air. if escort doesn't have sonar simply submerge without shooting and proceed thru straight. remember u r in iron coffin and must give it all for the fatherland or the italians. stealth is your weapon of choice. viel gluck herr kaleun :arrgh!:

I'm sorry to be dense, but, how are you doing that?

I would love to be able to use this when trying to avoid detection..

Thanks.

If you don't mind sending me a PM that would be great.

As long as both sides are turning, RPM = (set speed in knots)x50 on electric motors and RPM = (set speed in knots)x31.25 on diesels. So staying at or below 100 RPM means not exceeding 2 kt submerged. That is the default speed setting for silent running, automatically selected when you order "Silent running". You can go faster that that, but you're not silent any more, whatever the little icons say. OP was spot on: doing 3 kt is ringing the dinner bell for DDs.

AFAIK, you can not set your RPMs in SH3 (can in SH5, BTW). But there is a tachometer next to the engine telegraph at the forward end of each diesel. Go there, order up various speeds, and watch the RPMs respond. Notice too that motor RPM leads log speed. The motor speed changes quickly, but the boat takes much longer to respond.

ahh, that makes sense. Ok, I guess I mis-read the comment.

Thanks for the clarification.

Jimbuna, is there a settable tachometer dial on SH3 boats? And, if so, where is it located? I know the tachs on the forward bulkhead of the CR are settable in SH5, but I don't see any tachs in that location (or anywhere else in the CR) in SH3. And in SH3, the Diesel compartment tachs are not interactive. BTW, I use FlakMonkey's interior mod.

Regarding setting RPM, I use shift-F2 to free-roam to get a straight look at the tacho's. I found pointing the knot-speed dial to about 1.7ish will get the RPM under 100.
