My computer is a home entertainment system. I don't own a TV so games, movies, news, research, conversation and over 100 PC games I've bought since the mid-80s is an on-going investment. Buy some games, upgrade, a few more games, upgrade, some demanding software, upgrade. More storage space, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. I certainly cannot attribute any of my hardware/publication expenses to SH alone. I've been a sub fanatic since the 60s.

Gave me an excuse to get cable internet which I was planning to get eventually so ... the cost of the 'hard copy' DVD to have ( to hold in my grubby hands ) and the D2D download to play plus the 1.5 add-on is it.

Well worth the price ;-)

Happy Hunting!

PS: I had the books et all from the SHCE days.

New video card and power supply. The new monitor I was going to buy anyway. LOL

just the cost fo the game. ive always been fascinated by submarines in WW2 and WW1. most of my sub stuff would have been purchased regardless of the game.

if nuclear subs didnt exist and fleet subs were the norm i would prolly have joined the navy instead of the army heh.

the gato class subs are just beautiful boats while i find the new nukes ugly as spit and lifeless. i just wish i had been born earlier with enough money to buy a gato class when the govt put them up for sale.

SH4 didn't cost me one cent. I got it free at my pal's store as a free gift.

:yep: But it did cost me my time spent in game time when I should be modeling and animating. The wife also threatened me to spend the rest of my days in the dog house if I don't just grow up and stop playing kiddie video games. Whadda she know anyway?

Let's see, new computer, getting SH2, 3, 4 ( including the add-on ). These in no particular order: lost sleep, coffee, beer and some stuff from the SUBSIM Store
( clock, hat ). 5000 + posts, what does that equal in time :hmm::doh:

But it's all good :yep::up:

Just had to ask. After buying the game I've been spending money re-acquiring books I used to have for research and will be buying the Silent Service DVD's. Wound up going from a 1950 pro to the HD 3870 for the game. (Video work made me choose ATi over nvidia)

If it wasn't for the fact I know a bunch of great freeware / open source programs, there would have been money spent there to support modding :) It's one of the reasons I put the modding tools thread up- try to give pointers to free software for those who wanted to try their hands at modding.(which BTW has some new freeware audio tools listed as of Sunday)

Already had Vegas Pro 8 which lets you do a bunch of stuff, so that wasn't related to SH4

(Hey CCIP- know what you mean about keeping a system beefed up for video / audio. I'm gonna have to get a 2nd drive of 500GB or larger because I'm falling behind on getting my video's edited. Have eaten up a bunch of the space on my 320GB internal and 250GB external storing the videos so far. Will also need to add another 2 GB to speed up the editing / rendering process.)

I bought SH4 on pre-order and had it the day of its release. I installed it, started a new mission and was dismayed that I got 5spf (5 seconds per frame). The game was unplayable on my machine  . The only game I actually wanted to play was SH4, so I saved up and ten months later, in December I bought myself a new PC, so that cost about US $2000 at the exchange rates of the time.

Because it took me so long to get a PC capable of playing it, that's why I'm asking all the stupid questions now and not a year ago.

I'm still trying to get the money together for a memory upgrade so I can play SH4. If you count all the hours spent playing that could have been used for something productive, well, I don't even want to think about how much money that costs. But it's spent doing something you love and it's fun, so it's worth every penny.

It's mouses... during the 80's it was established that mice would refer to the rodents and mouses to the pointing devices.

According to WikiAnswers:

Quote:

MOUSE is an acronym, and is short for Manually-Operated User-Selection Equipment so technically MOUSE is already the plural (... Equipments?) Most people, however pluralise acronyms, and initials in general, by adding a small s, so it would be MOUSEs, which seems a bit silly. Mice is also wrong, as it doesn't stand for anything, but it does make more grammatical sense than calling them MOUSE or MOUSEs. (NB: If a MOUSE was so called because it looked like the animal, then mice would be correct, but that isn't the case, although small body, long tail, who knows...)
Seems like the answer to an A or B question could be C:rotfl:

STEED 03-25-08 06:32 PM

About £100 for a new graphic card and and couple of quid for the game, bought the game off a friend when it was full of bugs and he gave up on it.

I now believe he has bought the game again last month. :rotfl:

momo55 03-25-08 06:51 PM

50€ for SH4 + 15€ for the addon and that's it . With the MultiSH4 installs with differend splendet mods its cheap as chips . The misses can't complain ...those 2 cats of her costs more than me every month .:rotfl:

LaughingSwordfish 03-25-08 08:42 PM

Here are my expenses in US $:

SHIV: $ 63,50

U-boat Missions: $ 36

2 GB of RAM because of Vista: $70

But when I use the formula: value=money/hours of entertainment SH4 comes out very favourably compared to cinemas, nightclubs etc.

Not that it really matters, but:

Quote:

Wired Style: Principles of English Usage in the Digital Age
(ed. Constance Hale, HardWired, 1996, ISBN 1-888869-01-1) says:
"What's the plural of that small, rolling pointing device invented
by Douglas Engelbart in 1964? We prefer ~mouses~. ~Mice~ is just
too suggestive of furry little creatures. But both terms are
common, so take your pick. We actually emailed Engelbart to see
what he'd say. His answer? 'Haven't given the matter much
thought.'
Quote:

"In fact, Engelbart shared credit for the name with 'a small
group in my lab at SRI.' Nobody among his colleagues seems to
remember who first nicknamed the device, but all agree that the name
was given because the cord ('tail') initially came out the 'back' of
the device. 'Very soon we realised that the connecting wire should
be brought out the "front" instead of the back,' Engelbart notes,
but by then the name had stuck."

The Microsoft(R) Manual of Style for Technical Publications
(ed. Amanda Clark, Microsoft Press, 1995, ISBN 1-55615-939-0)
says: "Avoid using the plural mice; if you need to refer to more
than one mouse, use mouse devices."

So, 1) the urban legend of the acronym is false... the word mouse for computer mouses really did originate from the likeness to the rodent, but is to be considered a new word of the english language, and not obligated to inherent the irregularities of the plural for small rodents. 2) the inventor of the mouse doesn't really care what you call it, but then again, the guy was a technical genius, not an english language one.

To settle the matter, we must try to understand how the english language works. Here's an examples that will hopefully settle the issue:
* Tooth
plural: teeth
* Gold tooth (still a tooth, just a particular kind)
plural: Gold teeth
* Sabre tooth (an extinct feline with incredibly big teeth, whose name originated from the word tooth, but it's in no way just a "kind of tooth")
plural: Sabre tooths (it does not inherit the plural irregularity)

Likewise:
* Mouse (the rodent)
plural: mice
* Field mouse (still a rodent, just a particular kind)
plural: field mice
* [Computer] mouse (no longer a rodent, it refers to the pointing device whose
name was insipired by the rodent)
plural: [Computer] mouses

conclusions:
* If you use "mouse devices" you're trying to be politicaly correct by avoiding the issue by pluralizing "device" instead.
* If you use mouses, as short for computer mouses, then you can correctly tell the difference between a pesky animal and an elegant and functional pointing device
* If you use mice, your just part of the masses.

Not that it really matters, since using one or the other won't give you more tonnage in SH4
