I did join the navy, and I did ask for a destroyer, so I couldn't vote any differently. I think I was lucky--due to the time and place (San Diego, 1970) I served on one that was actually built during the war.

Well, you ARE asking on a forum full of submarine fans, I wouldn't be surprised about where the majority of answers would lie :p

I wanna be a U-boat Kapitan or a Pirate and that's final.:arrgh!:

I don't go down with my ship, I make the other Captain go down with his.

I chose SSBN ... the new ones that have just been converted to launch 100's of missile's. I forget what you call them I'll have to google it.

They have about four of them converted now. Homeported out of Guam with two crews now Blue and Gold.

Makes it a little easier on the home life just having to serve three months (90 days give or take a day or two either way).

Lots of food in case of war, seal teams to go ashore for repleshment of supplies and we could outlive every nation on the earth after a nuclear winter.

Submarine's forever ...

I voted subs and SSN's. That whole stealthy hunter-killer thing is way to cool to pass up!

I like the idea of tracking a 'Boomer' while it doesn't even know you're there. Of course I'd hae to be the captain! :D

BTW, cool picture Sailor Steve:up:

It never really occured to me be those 5" turrets are pretty big.

Yea, that's what I meant. The Ohio SSGN conversion is what he's talking about there.

A month ago, the nuclear submarine USS Ohio, formerly a highly survivable Trident ballistic missile thermonuclear deterrent platform (SSBN), triumphantly completed the initial sea trials of her conversion to an “SSGN” configuration: a super-stealthy and long-endurance undersea vessel designed for forward presence and deployment of up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, large unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs), and as many as 100 Navy SEALs or other commandos with their equipment and mini transport vehicles. That's right, the 24 seven-foot-inner-diameter vertical launch missile tubes from Ohio's prior successful career as a “boomer” have all been repurposed.
