Im only going to be pissed if:

- their sources are not cited
- they pass the entire thing off as their own original work
- try and sell it for monetary gain

edit: If anyones really up in arms, heres the permissions cited from the mods readme:

Quote:

- Aboslutely nothing found within the Trigger Maru modpack or associated graphics pack may be used for any commerical product of any size, shape or form.

- Trigger maru is open source freeware, made by the SH4 modding community. All permissions of individual mods are subject to their author's permissions.

- You otherwise don't need "permission" for anything. The Trigger Maru mod was compiled for the love of the game, and appreciation for the History behind the game. This mod is presented as a community works, for the bennfit of all. The compling author (Ducimus), takes no credit for any of the specific works cited. Any specfic design or modification by the compiling author, anyone is free to use as they see fit in any modification they desire, so long as it is not used in any commercial product of any size, shape, or form.

Here is the blurb (badly translated by Google) from their site, Ducimus is certainlly mentioned and there is no mention of money & they are not the guys responsible for the infamous "Seawolves" debacle....

"As some of you already know, we are currently working on a Silent Hunter 4 Modpack, which for the most part on the trigger of a Mod Maru Ducimus for Subsim.com based. The Modpack is called "Fall of the rising sun" and is currently in the beta phase. We sat at Modpack the focus on realism and atmosphere. Especially in the Config. Settings, such as AI, we have made significant changes.

Moreover, MadMax, the main person responsible for the Modpack are, the Instrummente as compass, depth indication, bigger display and new ships to implement. For more information, find it in the forum or on the main page."

WOW, I watched the rest of it....the raped the hell out of the mods here.

tater 03-10-08 03:15 PM

Not sure, thought it was that other outfit.

tater 03-10-08 03:23 PM

I was thinking of that "combatplanes" site that sells mods.

Yeah i think that was them.

Now personnaly, im free with anything that i do. I really don't give a crap. However i do respect others opinons who do not share a similar feeling. This is one reason why i labeled the credits and permissions in the readme file thats in the mod the way i did.

Now, I'm no lawyer, but If anyone bothers to read the fine print, I think I basically protected other peoples work that i used and gave away my own. If you recognize your work,... "All permissions of individual mods are subject to their author's permissions." Its cited right there in the credits and permissions.

If i used others work, i listed the name, and breif description of what it was. Even if i used it as a base and changed it around to suit my own needs. So the implication is that if its not specifically listed, then i did it myself. (god i hope i didnt forget anyone), and that whatever is listed, is subject to that authors permission.

At any rate, i dislike sounding indifferent, but.. really, i got enough on my plate as it is already, so im not going to concern myself.

No problem, we can do the same to them... they might make nice improvements, one of us 'buys' it, and spreads it around, we all mod, and ....

They will not make a case cos they stole it in the first place... 'proof is in the pudding' :)

tater 03-10-08 04:25 PM

Yeah, I'm open source aside from for-profit stuff. Use it at will for freeware, don't use it at all for pay-ware.

Well, I looked in their shop, and the stuff they had for sale was legit there. No mod rip-offs. Just games from the manufacturer, books, movie DVD's.

Not a add-on in sight in the pay for section, but several large add-ons for free in the download section.

Ducimus 03-10-08 04:37 PM

Nobody makes money off my work, not even me! :rotfl:

The credits, if you read them, say:

Modded by AOTD MadMax and AOTD Rhonen

The base mods (all have been changed):

Campaign based on Trigger Maru

Sub-skins by Fubur (I assume they mean Fubar)

Environment and reflection by R.O.W.

3d ship models by IamBecomeLife

The AOTD group have been modding SH3 for quite some time, and MadMax is responsible for some very good (mostly German) merchant ships.

I too first thought of the skunks at CombatPlanes, but my feeling is that MadMax and friends have probably just put together their version of a supermod, and it will be cool and it will be free.

At least it had better.

Sonarman 03-10-08 05:21 PM

I certainlly have downloaded a mod from AOTD in the past and it was free and very good.

As to our "old friends" over at Combatplanes you may wish to turn your microscopes on this
judging by the lack of screenshots and dead links it looks abandoned, lets hope so!
Perhaps Sid Meier will sue them for using "Silent Service" in the title!

Ducimus 03-10-08 05:33 PM

Well, if their version of the mod kicks ass, might be time for me to *TRY* and hang up the modders hat. I just want a better game to play, i dont care all that much about who makes the mod, i just want a better game. I still wonder how i ended up where i am today. Making a "supermod" was never what i really wanted to do. It just sorta happened.

Sonarman 03-10-08 05:37 PM

A good modpack, like a house, requires a good foundation and you are by far the best builder I know!

Ducimus 03-10-08 05:40 PM

HEH, i had lots of practice from Sh3. Some people used one supermod, other people used another, i made my own from bits and pieces from all over the place. A years worth in the tinkering. Never published it. (edt: eerr i take that back, i published an EARLY version of it, ages ago)
