I think what it boils down to is that if you are happy and enjoy the Type II, then use it. I was, and am, a big fan of the Type II...you really are getting to learn the finer points of the game as well as bonding with your crew.

In my personal experience, I have found that the Type IVB is the boat for me...that thing is sturdy as all get out, and I love it. I have taken it, literally, to the bottom of the ocean and back!

I just upgraded on patrol 6 of gwx 2 in April 1940 to a IXB. Finally have more torps to use to continue my current tonnage total of 251k

I've been in and out of scapa in my old VIIB 2 times in patrols #1 and 4.. just gotta take your time and wait for bad weather.

Ok I'm a Type IID junky....so here are my two cents. First off I've been using the type II since the 1st of September 1939. The IIA has a very limited range even a 3-5 knots. (I believe its 3000+ or so) which means you have to watch the fuel or end up off the coase to France with nothing aboard:damn:
But the IID's have a much greater range. At 5 knots you have a range (according to my navigation officer) is like 22000km (i'm not exactly sure) so range is not a problem here its all personal preference.
As for your updates. If you enjoy the type II's the battery update is a good idea. You get good range and at slow speed you can stay under water for a long time. The engine upgrade is not a good investment in my book. Although you get an increase in speed (i think its +1kn) you lose alot of your range because of this. I stick with the basic engine and updated batteries.
As for the skeptics in my 9 patrols I've snuk into 6 ports and sank over 60000 tons including a heavy cruiser and an oil tanker that nicely burned or 10 hours.:|\\

i always start in 1939 and try go as far as i can into the war, no point starting in the closing years and not experiencing the happy time. as for the type II, i dont really try to lecture peole on a good boat, go with whatever suits you. for me i would rather have a type VII B for the agility and speed, or one of the IXC's for the range.

good hunting!
