Cripes a fault like this could be anything, most errors that I have are compatability with various modded items such as graphics & sounds, most other faults such as ini will come up with the SH3 box as BBW mentioned. For example I created with a very old version of Wavelab some sounds/speech in ogg format, ran fine on one system, ran fine on all systems in windows (not in game), however CTD & even total reboot in my (now old) system in the game, probably the type of onboard sound/card.:-? I later purchased Sound Forge & allways works 100%. What happened in game was that all went ok till that particular sound was called on then whammo! This also applies to grahics, a ship/plane may suddenly appear that your system doesn't like and CTD!!:damn: So you have to try and see ahead, by checking navmap screen as to what is coming before it becomes visable!:yep:
This may not apply here but has happened to me for sure.:x |
Ok, here's my latest :damn: .
Last night I completed a successful attack on a convoy. This was a big deal since I had spent 75% of the patrol (and about two hours real-life-time) searching in vain through rough seas. I successfully evaded the escorts and sloowwwly rose to the surface. Once on the surface I saved the game. Not long after that I quit the game after running out of fuel. Bummer . . . but I figure I saved it so I can start from the save and try to make a neutral port. I go to restart and the damn game hangs at the "A long time ago . . . " screen. After a few minutes I get the BSOD (Black Screen of Death) and the familiar error popup. I figure I'll try again tomorrow. Well, it's tomorrow and the game still crashes at the same spot. WTF!?!?! I've got about a week left before I give up. It seems as though I've never gotten through a gaming session without a crash. I've never gotten through a patrol without one. I've had to restart & reload campaigns constantly. After three weeks with the mod I've only completed one cruise and I'm having serious technical trouble getting through the second. This is totally unsat. Anyhow, I just found out about Error Logging. Here's the text of the SH3 errors so far (in order from most recent): This one is the "A Long Time Ago . . . " hang/crash. I've had three of these since 2:04am, last night. Quote:
Next up is the crash that occured as I was viewing the submerged sub externally, this is detailed in prior posts. Quote:

Here's one from Jan 07, I forget the circumstances exactly, but I think I was managing the crew while submerged and under attack. Quote:

I show that there was another crash just three minutes after this last one. Here it is: Quote:
So, here's the last three: Quote:

Not being any kind of techie . . . I do see "faulting module sound.act" as a common error. Could part of the problem be with my sound card or files, as Reece seems to suggest? I have a HUUUGE gramaphone file with some of those .oog files, a ton of .mp3's and who knows what else (actually, I've posted screenshots of my gramaphone folder in a "music" thread around here). I guess I could try cleaning that thing out. (I just removed the .oog files, the .ram files and one .wav file. Now there are only .mp3's in there.) Here's my system Belarc specs: Quote:

Hmmm
I notice quite a few of those CTD are sound.act related You definately dont have any other sound mods enabled ? Can you lower the hardware acceleration on the sound too ? Was the gramaphone on at the time of these CTDs ? |
I noticed the sound thng thing too.
Yes, the gramaphone was on during each of these crashes. I've also noticed while running at high time compression (512 & above) that the game will freeze for a few seconds from time to time. During these freezes the song will skip. I think this occured with stock SH3 as well so it might just be part of the game. I've set my max time compression at 2600(?). I don't have any sound mods enabled, other than what came with stock GWX. I did have some of the old radio mods loaded into the gramaphone. I've taken them out. I will try reducing the sound card acceleration & see if all of these changes fix anything. I've given up hope of restarting my saved game. It seems it will not load under any circumstances. Always hanging at the "A long time ago . . . " screen. The command room never comes into view. Just another dissapointment. Ho-hum. |
I concur with BB, if you have ANY sound mods enabled try disabling them, if not lower the hardware sound acceleration a couple of notches, also try updating your sound card drivers.
The ones you have within the crew screen what where you doing? I recall a stock CTD problem when using the crew presets. Ref |
1) As BBW & Ref said, it could be your gramaphone these are ogg files as I mentioned earlier, try running without playing the gramaphone.
2) If it still fails I've never tried this but if it's possabe disable the sound, in game and test or temporarily disable the system sound, run game and see what happens. 3) If stock 1.4b runs ok then if you have a backup of your sound folder copy stock version over the top & try, as I said in my previous post your system may not like some of the new ogg files.:-? |
Enough.
Now I can't even load ANY of my saves. They ALL hang at the "Not so long ago . . ." screen. Ef it. I give up. I'm ripping the whole damn thing off my system. I'll reinstall and try again. What a pain. |
I just spent all flippin night (9:30pm -0 1:30am) uninstalling/reinstalling/uinstalling/reinstalling.
Now, four hours later I'm finally ready to fire up my FRESH installation of GWX and what happens . . . IT FRICKING CRASHES ON THE LOAD SCREEN. So, my problem has gone from bad to worse. Used to be it just crashed four hours into the game . . . now I can't even GET into the game. This is really unbelieveable. First of all, I couldn't figure out whether I had the European or US version. Turns out I have the European version (bought off Ebay). So, I made a fresh download of all the patches from v1.1 - 1.4b. My clean installation showed 1.4 in the lower corner. I assume this is correct. Stock SH3 starts up just fine. Then I installed GWX. I ran allll the files through the mod checker thingy to make sure they werent corrupt. They weren't. I followed all the instructions for installation at the GWX page. I did GWX 2.0 first, then I did 1.03, then I setup SH3 Commander, making sure to cut & paste the proper updates into the .cfg folder. I made a few option changes via SH3 Commander. Then I loaded a few of the GWX mods via JSGME. Then I started GWX via SH3 Commander. The GWX load screen shows 1.03. About 3/4 of the way through . . . CRASH! Black screen. Error. So, I rollback SH3 Commander, uninstall all mods and try again. Same thing. So, I rollback SH3 Commander and try to start the game with the GWX desktop icon. Crash. So, I try starting via the regular SH3 Icon. Guess what? Crash. So . . . should I just quit. This is NO FUN AT ALL. Here's the error log: Quote:
Tomorrow I uninstall/reinstall ONE MORE TIME and that is IT. One more day and I'm DONE with this. |
You are having a fun time I think not! If your install now dies at loading then I would uninstall GWX 2 then uninstall SH3, now reinstall & patch to 1.4b, now check that SH3 stock now runs correctly, if it does & you have a DVD burner copy the whole game (SilentHunterIII folder) to the DVD as a clean stock 1.4b backup, it comes in handy!:yep:
Then install GWX 2, do not install SH3 Commander yet, now try running game and check for errors. If the old errors are back then please do the following: 1) Copy the whole SH3 GWX 2 data folder to a temp folder. 2) Uninstall GWX & copy the stock version from DVD back to SilentHunterIII folder, it is now stock 1.4b. (no reinstalling) 3) Now copy the contents of the GWX 2 Sound folder to your stock Sound folder, try running game again if the error occurs then it is a sound problem with probably 1 or more ogg files. I will keep checking back & you can allways PM me, we will get this licked.:yep: Good Luck!:D |

Where does it say on the GWX Homepage to install GWX 2.0 and then add 1.03 over it?:rotfl: Don't mean to laugh and I feel your pain in getting it working but version numbers are there for a reason. Usually, there are progressive.;) |
Surely not that Dan, I read that and assumed a typo, no one would install a new version then downgrade it!

What's SH3 Commander 1.03 then??? Do you mean the 1.03 configs?
Shouldn't be using those either.;) Sorry Reece mate, I'm leaning towards my previous guess. It happens all to regularly when someone is excited or frustrated, mistakes happen. The only thing to do is to slowly and deliberately go through step by step. |
I can't remember the versions of SH3 Commander, but if your correct .... Shock horror, no wonder He's having problems, doesn't add up though, why not just install 1.03 or 2.0, Oh well there ya go!:yep::rotfl:
|
Real quick . . . I based that installation (2.0 then 1.03) on a post that I read somewhere around here. Now I can't find it. Arrrghh! Anyhow, I thought it odd too . . . but the guy was from the GWX team so I figured he knew what he was talking about. It was after midnight and I was near burned out. Yep, mistakes happen.
I'm hoping it really is this simple (and stupid). I'm getting ready to go through the process again. Here's what I'm gonna do: Complete uninstall of SH3 Restart Reinstall to 1.4b Install GWX Install the trawler patch. Install SH3 Commander & apply the GWX .cfg's. I don't have a DVD burner, but I did copy the stock, patched SH3 installation to a temp directory as a backup. Heeerrre goes! (If this works it'll be a lesson in "follow directions thoroughly" and "nothing good is easy".) |
I refuse to reinstall and start yet another career... and have taken no corrective action and...
My CTD problem has mostly gone away (knock wood) I have not CTD in 3 Patrols now. Mine was not a gramaphone nor trawler issue. But was very similar to Blckhands problem always crashing just as the game was starting to appear in the background. It was quite the sucktasticness, so I feel his pain. :damn: But hang in there bro youll get it sorted out and be on your way soon. |
