Mod? No. Technically this is not possible without gross simplifications/substitutions that'd frankly make it meaningless.
Commercial? At this point I'm 90% sure there will be a DC2 game, provided the SHIV add-on does well. Radioshow: As a fan of both SH and Falcon... I don't think that's a good parallel. Falcon modders had much more access to the game's code than we do here. It's simply impossible to mod SHIII/IV to the same depth as F4. It doesn't exculde, of course, that like Falcon, SHIII and IV will have long modding lives - but the mods are more likely to be of a fix-what's-already-there type and simply adding new eye-candy rather than tearing the game apart from the ground up and fixing all the faults with its internals. |

I never meant to suggest that any source work be done only that it would most likely be required, and that kind of work is a long process. My bad.

Ultimately, something like this MIGHT be possible... As noted, making the sub a surface ship wouldnt be hard.... Deck gun station could be heavily modded to look like a turret, though getting multiple barrels to work won't happen. Change the behavior of the torps to mimic DC's - so that stuff like "range" would equate to depth.... Might work. Fix the look of the weapons - you would be limited to dropping charges off the fantail - no way your gonna get k-guns to work that I see right now. Turn "Radar" into the sonar station - although getting the temp gradients to affect it would bo a problem.... Hydrophone station would just need a new "look".
Ultimately - it could be done - thought it would be a lot of work - and patchwork at that. This doesnt even TOUCH the multiplayer aspect - that I would see as not being a possibility until some stability with a "single player DD Mod" came out and had some maturity. I gave it a yes - there would be alot of technical problems - but to get SOME decent functionality there would be no need to do anything to the source. Going beyond some however would get into things that would require crossing lines I don't think are right. Ultimately - if there was enough support for something like this - you would instead see a company pick up the idea and start creating it from scratch or licensing the engine of SH4 only. In the end - such a concept could create an excellent "sim" of the surface raiders used in the atlantic - or of a true DC2 game. Another 2 cents from..... |

i'd rather say no...
The graphic part is of course kinda doable by substituting one of US destroyer 3d model as you said. But we would be far from a useable mod (not to mention you shouldn't have to sacrifice a US sub whilst trying to overwrite it with some destroyer...) The point is, it would definitevely implies coding, which is not possible at the time... |

if it does not come with SHIII or IV it might come back with "Enigma" with had a DC and PT boats included in the game. Remember that part?...

I've been hoping and praying for a DC2 mod or addon. Thats a genre thats been neglected since DC (there is the knights of the pacific or something game but which has russian MTBs - just not the same) but I'm talking a full campaign much like SHIV that would include stuff like:
1. Pacific warfare (naval battles, escort, shooting up islands!); and 2. Atlantic warfare (mainly convoy escort and minor naval battles). Just tell me where to pay my money! :) (hint hint UBI). |
I voted yes
I have thought about this concept many times, as a matter of fact earlier tonight I was steaming out of pearl admiring a Carrier and a destoyer on my way out and I thought... wow wouldn't it be great to command one of those, I know to some degree it was accomplished in SH3, however I could never find the mod. and Speaking of Falcon 4.0 I have the game and I used to play it all the time however the graphics just got to the point to were I couldn't enjoy it anymore I have never seen these mods for it could someone point them out to me??, and so long as we are talking about games that have longevity due to mods I think I will throw in Star Trek Bridge Commander I have never seen a game more modded. It is nothing of the original game, and now they are building a mod so that you can walk around an entire starship!! when the game first game out the most you could do is sit in the captains chair of the Galaxy class or Sovereign bridge, you could only command a hand full of ships. now there are tons of bridges, tons and tons more ships, you can walk all over the bridges, beam to other ships etc... etc.. and not to mention where as the game was story line based now another mod has made it Dynamic much along the same lines as SH and last but not least which should be a selling point to any game company who wants longevity in a game, if they do make it moddable like Bridge Commander then they could possibly expect it sales to increase and the price to go up, when Bridge commander first came out 2000 or 2001 I can't remember it sold for around $30.00 when I bought the game a year ago it cost me 75.00 and if you look on ebay you may find it for up to $120.00.
