Cant say I've even heard of it until now. Maybe its just because im a bit young (I was growing up when the Sega Genesis was released), but still.
I do remember my first Subsim being Aces of the Deep though. Me and my friend played that for hours on 0% realism :rotfl: |

My disappointment was with the shoaling: In 1 water would change depth, but in 2 if it dropped you into a scenario with 100 feet of water, thats what it stayed until you escaped, or died. At least that's my memory from the Atari version. |
silent service also had carriers.i sunk one with deck gun.i havent seen kaibokans modeled in any game since.you could aslso turn at all stop in ss.unfortunatly there was no career option.but a great game.

Silent Service on C64 was my first subsim. Played it for hours. The second one was Red Storm Rising. I recall playing The Hunt for Red October too but it wasn't my favorite.

I remember Silent Service *very* well, moreso because as a young budding programmer, it was the first commercial product that I bought that "let me" view the source code. :arrgh!:
Game wise though, I vividly remember manoeuvring the white pixel to-and-fro across the map screen. Actually, come to think of it, I *really* enjoyed it, like I did nearly all Microprose titles of the eighties (something about medals and ranks that I really enjoyed). I did hate the "what ship is this" copy protection though... |
Hmmm, I might just fire up my C64 emulator and give Silent Service a burl.
Now you see him... http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4972/ccs0jq4.gif Now you don't... http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9646/ccs1vc1.gif Woohoo!! http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/6797/ccs2nd1.gif |

I remember playing this game on my Amstrad 6128 :D Ahhhhh....the good old days......dont think i had the aptitude to actually make my boat go anywhere but i thoroughly enjoyed the look of the commandroom and moving between the different stations :) Ahh.....the days of "Gunship", "Pirates" and "Rambo"......*sniff*
Have a nice day :) |
Thanks for bringing back a good memory! Loved Silent Service on the C64, I'll have to dig it out, it's around here somewhere. I also liked Submarine, an Avalon Hill board game. Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Panzer Blitz and Luftwaffe too, all good Avalon Hill games.
