I got him in one of my first played missions to test shiv.
|
The single mission is incredibly easy because he's not patrolling, but just going in a straight line for a port. Its in campaign mode where he's really sporting a bone in his teeth.

Hey Ducimus, now you will need to create that Jap sub that goes with ole
Bungo Pete  JIM |

That would require getting an AI submarine, to shoot a torpedo. Which is something nobody's ever been able to acomplish. I know for a fact it is way beyond me, and requires some uber hex editing. Best i can do is a submarine that can shoot its deck/flak guns. Or a submerged one that does nothing but move from point a to point b.

Now that would be nasty! :yep: DD -------------YourSub --------------------------------IJN Sub DD DD |
Using the sub as a early warning device.....That is acutally a really damn good idea, im ashamed i didnt think of that. Technicaly speaking it doesnt matter what sub i use because you'll never see it. It would be nothing to add the german uboat to japans roster, position it below the surface , ahead of and in group with bungo pete. Not that ole bungo really needs needs the help in campaign , but the single mission... yeah!
I wonder if campaign woudld be overkill :hmm: |

You see a convoy, evade the DD screen (diamond formation) and all the while a sub or sub(s) were actually watching you, kind of like the center dot of a 5 (dice) and the destroyers converge. You could group the subs with the convoy at a depth and distance close between or farther away. A triangle formation outside of the DD diamond screen would be nasty. Now, another question: would sole IJN subs be deployed at choke points (say the Volcano islands) forming a SOSUS type net ( or is that overkill ) Lots to tinker with here! But also wanting to remain true to history and IJN ASW tactics (would make it damn tough to sneak inside areas with several layers of defence. AIR, ASW, and Surface * Who knows, a U Boat in Empire waters could have been a reality: http://www.ess.uwe.ac.uk/GENOCIDE/reviewsw54.htm Germany's Last Mission to Japan: The Failed Voyage of U-234 "Among the three hundred ton cargo was three complete Messerschmitt aircraft, a Henschel HS-293 glider-bomb, extra Junkers jet engines, and ten canisters containing 560 kg (1,235 lbs.) of uranium oxide (U235). The uranium oxide was to be used by the Japanese as a catalyst for the production of synthetic methanol used for aviation fuel. Other cargo consisted of one ton of diplomatic mail and 6,615 pounds of technical material including drawings of ME 163 and ME 262 aircraft, plans for the building of aircraft factories, V-1 and V-2 weapons, naval ships (destroyers of classes 36C and Z51, and M and S boats), and submarines (Types II, VII, IX, X, XI, XXI, and XXIII). German fire-control computers, Lorenz 7H2 bombsights, Lufte 7D bombsight computers, FUG 200 Hohehtweil airborne radars and bomb fuses were also included in the manifest along with other military" equipment and personal luggage." Japan acutaly took possestion of a couple of type 9 uboats. So its not a far stretch.

Neat! Assuming the operational manuals and tactical doctrine were aboard, why not apply the tactics of the Atlantic;)
Will be happy to do some tinkering in the Mis Editor on this. |

zactly :D -great idea thou (me shudders as to the outcome) |
Having a sub v sub was one of the highlights of SH2 for me.
I wish that was the case for SH3 and SH4. Although I would settle for hunting a none firing submerged sub than nothing at all. |
