Welcome to Subsim, CaptFarrell! To re-iterate some of the comments in this thread - Subsim is the friendliest and most helpful forum you're likely to come across. Ask anything you like and someone will have a solution for you. You WILL be assimilated. The sim is totally addictive and immersive - as an example... I returned from my holiday in England at 03:00 Sunday after the worst flight home possible which included one aircraft grounded due to engine failure, one flight cancelled for no apparent reason and the replacement flight delayed by a further 3 hours. Because of the various flight screw-ups, we flew to RI via ATLANTA! Yet, at 03:30, after downloading the 3,000-odd holiday photographs we'd taken, I loaded-in SH3/GWX and finished the patrol I had been forced to interrupt when the taxi arrived to take us to the airport 2 weeks previously. Bagged an Ore Carrier too! Now - is today Monday or Tuesday? Sleeping really screws-up the memory. Back on patrol in 15mins. Enjoy what is left of your normal life, SH3 will take over the rest of it! :D

CaptFarrell welcome aboard :arrgh!:

I understand you obtained the game with the d/l version, I did the same thing it's fine there is a manual (stock) you can print out included. Speaking of manuals have a look through the Community manual for information and tips, what you might not see in the table of contents you can search for.
I highly recomend SH3Commander as well, it's an add on that gives you great options and better crew management. If you install it become familiar with 'rollback', a feature in Commander that helps prevent conflicts when and if you install mods. Speaking of mods there's more out there then just one supermod. I would suggest before you get into that try a few single missions and perhaps one carrer game in stock to know what your gaining / missing / want. To get your feet wet.
One more important thing, make sure your patched up with the correct update for the d/l version. http://www.mysh3.info/shiii/index.php/Update_Patches

To good hunting.

Welcome Aboard – Stay away from the lemonade (Benard made it)

In order to get the most out of this simulator, I would suggest you first watch the movie Das Boot and then follow that up with reading Iron Coffins and Torpedo Junction.

Das Boot – Gives you a visual of Submarine life and stress (Being depth charged).
Iron Coffins – Gives you a good understanding of how Uboats operated, the political scene in Germany and the knowledge that you’re going to die (late war).
Torpedo Junction – Gives you sometime to look forward to when the US enters the war.:arrgh!:

Thanks to all of you again!

Is there a Community server out there that the game can connect to for Internet play with other users?

I can only imagine what that scene must look like with all of you out there cruising the oceans. Quite an impressive tasks force of u-boats I'm sure.

Can you hunt down other subs from other nations as well in this game? That would be challenging.

Regards,
Tim

Welcome CaptFarrell!

Here is some friendly advice:

First, be picky about your targets. Neutrals, friendlies, and especially Hospital Ships are the best targets, because they don't shoot back, and they don't change direction when the spot you.

When attacking large warships like carriers, cruisers, and battleships, stay on the surface so that you can outrun them.

When attacking smaller warships like destroyers and corvettes, run at flank speed at periscope depth. A depth of 8 or 9 meters is optimum.

Avoid deep water. Attack in the shallowest water you can find. The English Channel is the best place place for that, although harbors all along the English coast are fine, especially ones like Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe. Try a daring daylight surfaced attack for maximum effect.

Ignore airplanes. They can't really hurt you. When your crew spots one, stay on the surface and don't change course or speed. That confuses them.

Now, just do the opposite of what I told you, and you'll do fine.

Actually, what Puster Bill says is not far from the truth in Stock SH3.:rotfl:j/k

Regards Internet MP, UBI maintains a server for online play, this is reachable from the Multiplayer option in the menu.

There is lobby/ingame text and you'll need it to find someone playing exactly the same setup as you. Having the same setup is a must as if you don't, you get CTD's.:dead:

There is a number of us (GWX Crew) who regulary play MP and we use Teamspeak as our meeting place and voice comms. However, as we definately have different installs to everyone else at the moment, there isn't much MP happening. But soon.

Yes, MP is great fun and is geared around some excellent purpose made MP Missions. Hehe, watch out for the homing torps.:damn:

Although there are AI subs (quite a few new ones coming in GWX 1.04:|\\, FYI, there are no AI subs in Stock SH3) they are either surfaced or submerged (due to limitations of coding, 'cos we don't have an SDK) and although they are sinkable and have damage models, you can imagine, finding a submerged AI sub can prove difficult, unless you are glued to the hydrohpone.

You can find further info about MP in the Multiplayer Sub Forum on this board.
