What I found most amusing was when Russia had its new anthem and no one knew the words to it. In fact I don't think there were. So everyone sang the old one. Well the Russians I knew. Now the new old anthem no one seems to know the words to it so they sing the soviet words. :)

Exactly! I never bothered remembering the new one. Whenever I hear the anthem nowadays, I just automatically launch into singing the old words (in an obviously sarcastic fashion). I remember when one new year's, my family just randomly sang the whole Soviet thing together while the music-only (as it was at the time) anthem played, and then laughed our asses off for the next half hour about it

Assimilate the Polish national anthem, change your state flag to the Polish one too.
Half of Polands population has moved to the UK soon... :-?

D±browski's Mazurek, Poles marching and taking back what once was theirs with sabres in hand.

It's sad we have such a dull one, it gives me sad feelings!:nope:

By the way I'm Kurtz's daughter call me Emelye, Em, or Antidike ( it's greek it's pronounced Anti-deekee [Emelye in the ancient Greek times would be Emelius for a male or Emelia for a girl or spelt something like that and that means enemy and my brother couldn't find enemy in greek so he put in adversary and the rabbit just jumped straight out of the hat!])

I always liked "To be a Pilgrim" by John Bunyan, when I was at school.
Quote:

Who would true valour see,
Let him come hither;
One here will constant be,
Come wind, come weather.
There's no discouragement
Shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent,
To be a pilgrim.

Whoso beset him round
With dismal stories
Do but themselves confound;
His strength the more is.
No lion can him fright,
He'll with a giant fight,
But he will have a right
To be a pilgrim.

Hobgoblin, nor foul fiend,
Can daunt his spirit:
He knows, he at the end
Shall life inherit.
Then fancies fly away,
He'll fear not what men say,
He'll labour night and day
To be a pilgrim.

it was also played in 'Clockwise' - a film about an english school headmaster who goes off his nut, played by John Cleese.

Not too much about god or monarchy, or zealous patriotism, and it has the word 'hobgoblin' in it, seems like a good choice for a national anthem for England/UK to me. Plus it doesn't go on for too long, like some other indulgant national anthems I'll not mention here.... :arrgh!:

EDIT: removed hotlinked image of the first letter of the first verse.

I see only one other person has joined me in voting for keeping 'God Save the Queen'...I was beginning to think I was the only person in the UK who actually likes it.

Every time I hear it I think of what Britain should be; stately and proud, not the politically correct, emotionally obsessed freeloaders' paradise that it has become.

Just for the record, that 1st and 2nd verse of that song is cleaned from the German anthem. Only the 3rd verse is accepted, and it goes like this:

Unity and Rights and Freedom
For the German Fatherland
Let us all strive for that
Brotherly with heart and hand
Unity and Rights and Freedom
Are the foundation for happiness
Bloom in the glow of happiness
Bloom German Fatherland

One great anthem it almost broke my heart when just recently we were buying some jewellery with germanic runes on and the 's' rune was removed because it was ruled after WWII that it was ruled illegal. I'm angry with the Nazis for taking away our heritage by taking letters from our runic alphabet and also with the the EU community, it's just like taking the letter E from the alphabet and saying it's illegal to have it there.

That last bit was done by Emelye ( me I'm typing for daddy 'cos he seems slow and it's making annoyed just watching someone go in slow motion).

Land of Hope and Glory. It`s an emotional pompous piece of music, perfect for a national anthem. I wish Elgar was Norwegian, then we could use it;)

Agree though GSTQ is a depressing repetetive durge and needs changing. England should use jerusalem or something.

There are great moments in peoples lives and the one I'll remember forever is being on the touchline at the Cardiff Millenieum Stadium and hearing the crowd sing "Land of muy fathers" [pause for misty eyed reflection] and that's when I had the moment about our own national anthem. There was such feeling and belonging in that song in another language....

I want so much for England to have such a song.

This should be the British Anthem.

Bloody Beuatiful and not nationalistic at all. Serves all countries of the union.

BTW the lady singing is well fit.

XabbaRus 05-28-07 05:53 PM

BTW until we don't let our sailors get caught, build 2 CVFs and get all the new Astutes we can't really have Rule Britannia can we?

Rule Britannia, there need be no argument, it involves the entire union, its aggressive, imperialistic and rousing, everything the Empire should be, all others are wishy washy. Great Britain isn't defined by her monarchy, its changed enough times to be truly separate. Rather Britain is the people and the strength of her spirit.
