another write off thanks to pandering to consolers
http://www.gamershell.com/news/39408.html
Here is another game, unfortuantely, that I will most definately NOT be buying or playing. For the second time a title that I was looking forward to is going to be dumbed down to accomodate the disposable title market that console gamers seem to enjoy. First it was quake wars and now this. I was upset about quake wars but not all that surprised. SW Battlefront II PC port anyone? Maybe I am getting too old for new releases. Thank God for Galactic Civilizations 1 & 2 as well as the IL2 series and the Silent hunter series. They will have to continue to tide me over until the demographic changes from the pre-pubescent. Sorry for the tone, more than a little dissapointed in this news (yet again). |
I hear you.

I was disappointed when I learned of the console port, too. Hopefully the PC version will still be as good as it was when I played the closed beta. We've been promised editing tools, too, so at least it won't be a hard-coded title like most console games.

Looks like I'm too late to mention the open beta.
I was unaware that there was going to be a console port. After reading that you guys have totally killed my enthusiasm for this game:dead: I hope it's not going to be as bad as I'm imagining it............*twitches* ugh. |
Well sounds like they are porting it over to the consoles, and not the other way around, which is good at least. It also may not be a true port, but may be a co developed game, or just a partial port, where the basic game engine, graphics, etc is ported over, but the ui is designed from the ground up for each system.

That's what I'm hoping too NeonSamurai, I mean, these guys at Massive aren't newbies on the RTS scene, with the successful Ground Control series under their belts. The arcadish feel of the beta, is probably because they're trying to reach out to FPS gamers as well as RTS fans, or at least that's how it seems to me.
One thing WIC really does have going for it though, is that it fills a rarely used niche in RTS gaming, and that's the Cold War and Cold War gone hot scenarios. |
We'll see when the open beta starts, won't we? And either way, there are always realism mods!
|
Open beta underway, with three maps for those who pre-ordered and only two of them available for us mortals!
Changes from the closed beta that I've seen are the new menu theme, which I don't really like: the new class-selection UI (with its useful red 'Recommended' tag for classes that need players), the fact that a rudimentary (very rudimentary) Replay mode has been implemented, and that DirectX 10 is now supported. The only balance feature I noticed was that the Artillery ability of Paratroopers now no longer kills Heavy Artillery, merely takes away 95% of their hit points. There's bound to be other things than that, too, but I didn't notice them. |
This is fun, I haven't been a fan of rts..but this may change that:|\\

Map destruction:
Before the fight http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...per/Before.jpg After the fight http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...eper/After.jpg It doesn't get much better than this. Note the big crater near the centre of the screen - it was caused by a tactical nuke:o. The best part, though, is that the game uses realistic line-of-sight, so you can actually hide infantry and armour in the craters as you would be able to in reality. Forests offer protection, too, as only infantry can enter them and the treets completely obscur vision, rendering infantry in forests invisible. Therefore, forests are a popular target for the Napalm Strike tactical aid. |
I'm saying these things based on my VERY limited experience with the BETA. I hope the final game will be much better than the boring crap I have tried.
I got to be honest. I am not liking this game very much. Maybe it's just that there are a lot of people who don't know what they're doing, but it's not fun. Doesn't feel much like a war at all. It's fast and small. There are so few units to choose from and WiC went with the rock, paper, scissors approach to gameplay (*cringe*). The battles are very arcade (unrealistic). Like many people said, with a realism mod this game would be really neat. My units look and feel like ants most of the time so it would be nice if I could have more than a handful at a time. I kept wishing it were more epic. I'm sure there are or will be options to play with lots more points to call in many units, but with what I experienced it was small forces on relatively big maps. They felt even smaller because they get killed easily when confronted with their counter (rock, paper, scissors ugh) To sum that up, the game is boring when each player just rushes around with their handful of units (very noob and lame). I have yet to get some cool teamwork going. I guess it doesn't help that I'm new to the game and still have much to learn myself. I could see this game being awesome with more realistic battles at a larger scale with great teamwork. |
:hmm: The problem I find with these games is the oversight of the battle itself
its so complex that its hard to follow the progess. which will result in frustration of what the heck is going on?! nah, this game is nothing for me (thought I,m a RTS freak, besides flying it is my second favorite Genre;) ) |
While I love the game myself, I can fully relate to everything Ilpalazzo wrote about it, and I'd love a realism mod, too. I also have more than one gripe with the nuclear bomb, and with peoples' inability to choose the class best suited for winning matches.
