Don't you people see what's going on in that pic??
The vessel in question is obviously travelling down-hill.:ping: |
Somewhat realated but the other night I got bombed and it tore up the fwd torpedo room and flooded it.
The sub sat in the water bow down, stern up in the air, screws clear of the water. We could still make headway albeit slowly. That is untill the other bomber came along. |
Its not a bug, its an "undocumented feature" the dev's were ever so kind as to include.
Saying otherwise means you are a nagging troll. Just pay your freakin money and SHUT THE HECK UP! |

Seems a trifle unlikely, doesn't it?
I don't think it's about drifting - unless it's the sort an earlier post referred to where the ship manages to drift for hundreds of miles to a port :D I had a doozy last night - big freighter, fired two torps at it, one hit forward. I was about to have another go when I saw a DD steaming up and the freighter had it's bow low in the water - forward well deck awash., I went deep and evaded, all the time waiting for the little red wreck symbol to appear when the freighter finished sinking. To my surprise, over the next hour or two I alternately evaded the escorts and popped up to launch another torp or two at it - I ran out after putting 6 torpedoes into it, the ship is now still running at 3-4 knots with the rest of the convoy, still with its nose in the water and rudder largely above it, while I'm transitting home to Pearl with empty tubes. A bit less than realistic I guess, but I suspect it's only a small tweak away from a good model. I got 6 (maybe 7) torp hits, and as many misses, total mission tonnage is about 10k  Oddly enough I can't help feeling that my patient, endless stalking and limited success makes this one of my better trips....go figure |
After playing GWX the last few weeks, I decided to once again play SH4, in hopes my 10 FPS, were turning me off.. I tweaked my computer and now getting a steady 25-35FPS, only this time the same thing happened, MORE BUGS to discover.. I like the poster, destroyed the rear of some ship, and what do you know, still cruising at 6knots.
I laughed and put the cd away for storage..:down::down::down::down: |
I expect it's a design fault rather than a bug; perhaps the game doesn't check to see what physical damage is shown based on the hit location and implement results based on that. In other words, you hit the ship in the stern and the game shows the prop blown off, but that isn't modeled by the engine controlling the ship. It simply tracks hitpoints and flooding.
I don't recall ever seeing a ship with that type of damage in SH3; I did see a couple of missing propellers but could never tell if that was something wrong with the rendering or a result of battle damage. Usually the prop would stop turning if you hit the engine room and it would come to a halt, eventually. |
Look very closely and you'll see the feet of a couple of hamsters in the water. The ship isn't drifting...it's just operating on emergency hamster power.:p
|
EMP? Isn't that what happens when a nuke goes off nearby? Everything quits working and we have to use hamsters?
Thanks. I always wondered about that one. |
last night i came across a medium old composite? and small old split? travelling together unescorted and i let two go at the leading ship. first one missed but the second one baaarely caught it and blew off only the prop. there wasnt any evidence of hull damage like your pic. so i surface to gun down the second one thinking the first guy is dead in the water. as i move in to shoot i realize the second one has completely stopped and the one i actually hit is still cruising. explain that one. the first one ended up coming to a stop at some point later at which time i sank
oh and then i decided against my selfmade rule of never targeting a large tanker again and did so. it was in the harbor so i could pick my placement and i shot two towards the stack in hopes of getting the one shot kill (yea right) and my first one blew early and the second didnt make any hole. so i shot one more there. booom huge explosions and the rear promptly settles on the seabed. no sinkage. i then unload at least 6 more into it starting several fires across the remainging surfaced deck. no luck so i decide to ram the bastard. i make contact and slide across the deck pushing it down into the water alot more putting out the fires and it stays lower in the water. no destroyed yet. so i time compress. nothing. so i decide to head out and while im doing this from the map room the tank starts moving?? so i turn around and follow it around it approaches adeeper part of water and i lose it on the map screen but its still out there when i go to external...then i give up on it and then it reappears on my screen moving around more...back into shallows...then turns some and heads west along the shallows before turning southerly and towards open ocean. im thinking yess i finally get the sinkage but it disappears from my map again (still there in external) with about 10 feet out of the water. VERY strange. i took abunch of sn's because i doubt this happens often **** ok so i have so many other screenshots and other garbage i only have 640 kb on my hd and it didnt take any of the ones from my entire patrol why are they bmps and not jpegs?? ahh i dooo have them. fricken when they save the date is day/month/year so the way they are sorted they arent at the end of the list anymore they are jammed somewhere in the middle...how lame |

WHAT?? When you hit a **** in SH3 and destroy the rudders it STOPS.. They even went to the extreme and when you only hit ONE prop off, it will use its rudder to compensate because its turning.. |
Ok, but SH3 didn't model damage the way SH4 does. In the original picture, there's a gaping hole that makes it obvious the prop has been blown off by an explosion. I've seen ships where the screws didn't line up with the prop shaft, being offset by several meters up or down. Is that the result of battle damage? I'm pretty certain that's a rendering error. So when I stumbled across a ship that had a prop missing in SH3, I can't be certain if it had been blown off or if the game engine just failed to draw it for some reason.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing. Made me laugh. I recently hit a freighter in a convoy and it was continuing at 3kts even though the entire stern was actually UNDER the water!!
Better yet is the "displaced rudder" phenomenon. The rudder is about 10 feet to one side of where it should be but still turns (similar to what Quillan has described for props).....this is after a stern hit that takes out the prop as well. Again, good for a laugh....not exactly a problem per se!! If I knew how to take and post screenshots I'd show it for those who might not have encountered it. Cheers |
