Neat. The original was the M1921. The WW2 version was the M2 and the one I saw was the M3. Did the M2 have a fully shrouded barrel? I don't know, but I'm glad you think it looks good.

The one in the game is correct.

Historicly subs did their best to avoid enemy aircraft...but I noticed from this website
http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/08235.htm
that most subs were equipped with 2 50's and 2 30's
Would be cool if we had them in game.

After some web trolling I've surmised that S-Boats were never fitted with 20mm AA
they all got a single Browning, so I see why it is featured in the game.
As I've heard the S-Boat was a last minute addition to the game, that would
explain why the Browning wasen't enabled....the devs just diden't finish it. :hmm:

I don't believe the Browning M2 could be submerged and still operate, so I don't think it would have been the standard AA defense on any submarine. (The 20mm Oerliken, in fact, was not designed for submergence either, but proved fairly resilient. Barrels had to be changed frequently, however.)

shad43 04-14-07 05:31 PM

Hmm, I would assume that the Browning would be removed before diving and stored below decks.
Not trying to argue with your photo but I know for a fact the subs used Brownings
or were at least equipped with them, perhaps they were only used for added cover
whilst performing certin duties on deck. :hmm:

Not saying they weren't, but I believe they were used to suplement larger caliber guns or for AA defense while in port. Later s-class subs had an AA platform and it was for a 20mm Oerliken, not a Browning .50 cal.

Thanks for the info :D

Post a file service that works for you and I'll upload it for you there

Shrouded barrels were not usually used on the ship board and aircraft versions of the gun. They need to disipate the heat generated. I would stay away from rust on the guns to as they were taken well care of, and a rusty weapon was not tollerated. Lots of cosmoline and oil was used to keep the guns in good shape, or the salt water would cause them to deteriorate rather quickly.
