I tried with a decreased pitch of the sound but didn't like it. Like Hitman said, it is a cutoff from the unedited original sound file.
I did it for my own pleasure at the beginning, but found it suits well into the game so i wanted to share it with other Submarine-simmers. :) I will try to get other soundfiles from www.hnsa.org into the game - it's a great site. Tell |
Just a suggestion: The Alfa Tau mod for Sh2 had a nice sound where the surfacing sound was replaced with the matching Das Boot sequence, and they added to the end of it the sound of a diesel starting. You could modify the surface sequence in SH4 also to have it play the full starting sequence of the diesel, including the compressor blowing and initial three gas boosts. It would be cool to hear the diesels start like that when you surface-and the game automatically switches to diesel

Nice idea Hitman. But there is a problem with the transition from the end of the starting sequence (Submarine_surfacing.wav) to the engine sound (Submarine_diesel_exterior.wav). The pitch does only match for one or two speed settings. And when surfacing with 'all stopped' you hear the engine startup which will then suddenly become silent.
Another problem is (may be a bug?) that longer sound files (>15s) will only play once, it seems. Nevertheless i modified the submarine_surfacing.wav so that it suits in fine with 2/3 and standard ahead. But i had to shorten the startup sequence by quite some seconds. Still needs some fine tuning and will possibly never be perfect. Tell |

Update: If there is a standard waves sound for when you are at surface, you could add a subtle diesel at idle noise to that. When the sub starts moving it would we dorwned by the real diesel sound, and when it dives by the underwater and electric engine. Just a thought:hmm: I really would love to hear the diesels fire up when I surface :ping:

Again a great idea, Hitman.
I just finished the editing of the files. I consider them not perfect, but if you want to try them, here you go. I renamed the mod to RealisticEngineSoundFX. Things added: - When surfacing your boat, the diesels start up. (Hitman, you won't hear the whole sequence. Had to shorten them to under 15 seconds.:D) - When surfaced and at all stopped, the engines keep on running at idle speed.(No fuel is used;)) Download --> http://www.speedyshare.com/851965671.html Thanks again to you, Hitman, for the great ideas. Regards, Tell |
nice job man keep it up:up:

Thank YOU for taking the time to do it! Works wonderfully well!!!

Here is my Engine Mod

Good effort,
though if taking an idle sound for the boat engine - no matter what rpm you're running at or pitch setting the sound engine is using, it always sounds like it's stuck in idle. |
@ Tuddley
Nice but it sounds very different. Is this a recording of an diesel engine ? Maybe you should also edit the Submarine_diesel_underwater.wav !? *edit* First post updated |

The idle sound should stop being played as soon as you command any speed setting. |
Hi WilhelmTell,
nothing wrong with the samples themselves. To illustrate my point here are 2 HQ onboard (~ no doppler) recordings of a DB-605 engine, the first one idle, second one inflight mil power. Idle http://www.speedyshare.com/259456411.html Inflight http://www.speedyshare.com/686361902.html Quite a difference - try making the first sound like the second one with your editor. It's not as simple as taking an idle rpm sample * X to get an authentic engine sound for a certain speed setting. What i'm saying is that it would be more appropriate to take a sample of a diesel engine with drive shafts engaged actually doing a few knots, and start from there. |
Okay i see the point now. Maybe i work on it later and release another version but for now i am satisfied with the sounds so far.
Thanks for your tip though and for uploading those samples. By the way, where did you get them from, OakGroove ? |
@WilhemTell,
it's from an audio CD called "Checkflight Gustav" available at http://www.aircraftrecords.com/ . I bought it in the hope that O.M. would allow users to modify/replace IL-2/FB sounds ... well i'm still waiting. It's still good though to outrage my neighbours. :yep: |
