Now on SSBN's (at least the one I was on) we only rig for red (or rig for dark depending on who the OOD was lol) right before a PD trip or when were gonna surface at night.

The Captains red pen of death has gotten me once or twice, while rigged for red. Nothing all the funny just changes to messages before release. I've learned my lesson I just recommend stepping into Nav Ctr if he's in control during "rig for red".
