Well, to be honest I don't know enough about any of them to make an intelligent choice. I've heard of Gatos most often, though, so I voted for them. (I also played that platform on the old Silent Service II.)

The Balao
|
When I started with SH4 Balao was my first chooise..
Along the way I fell in love with that crazy looking Sargo.. Those strange bulbs on the back, beautiful tower.. My command for 19 patrols, USS Spearfish :sunny: http://www.oldsmobile1958.com/extra/comp2.jpg |
Gato
I preferred the Gato Class. I created a new skin under the name of USS Rasher (SS-269). The Rasher was one of the best USS subs during the WWII in the pacific :yep: . You can find information at http://www.ibiblio.net/hyperwar/USN/ships/SS/SS-269_Rasher.html :hmm:
Also there is good book by Peter T Sasgen “Red Scorpion: The war Patrols of the USS Rasher”.:arrgh!: |
Balao!!!
|
I hate to do this but I can't resist commenting that the Redfin (pictured above) was a Gato class ;).
My favorite? Start the war in an S or a Porpoise in Pearl and look forward to upgrading as I can. I kind of prefer the Gato though. It's test depth of 300 feet means I'll take it to 400 in a pinch and the escorts can still give a little trouble there. At 500 feet in a Balao though, it's too easy to get away to be challenging. Cheers! |
Balao for me as well :yep: Although I enjoy playing them all

Balao
Balao for me. Hey Rockin Robbins, how do you customize your sub like that? I want to add the battle flag for my USS Balao (and update it for my kills) and also do a similar design as you have for the bow.
|
SARGO because my first patrol on a HARD campaign, I torpedoed the Kongo with her!
4 tubes fore and 4 tubes aft combo I like. Makes for a nice broadside fan... |
S class all the way.
It's odd, with the U-boats I loved the IX but for some reason when it comes to fleet boats I just can't turn down an old rust bucket like the S-42. |
