This is done realisticly enough in DW. Real TA sensor does not chage error with extension amount. |
I can't change the variable TA sensitivity, since it is hardcoded in the interface, although I'm generally very happy with how the TA's perform now (except the dead cut-off if they fall below 3000ft, but I've got to look at exactly why that is the case before I just go and change something).
Modulating the length of the TA depending on the tactical situation is a crucial aspect of maneovering your boat. The TA is basically a long extension of your boat, so you have to handle it smartly to be effective. Perhaps the most crucial ASW tactic in DW that has been ignored completely is using the Towed Array sonar as a dipping sonar for seeing under the layer. One player aware of this tactic will always defeat another player unaware of this tactic in ASW combat, all things being equal. I can't think of another reason to have the TA deployed to its full length unless you are trying to hear around a sea mount or other terrain. Cheers, David |
I tried the mission. Collins is 8nm NE at the begining. It can be picked on TA, but it is that 'line darker than screen' problem. All you get is really tiny 50 Hz line. I tried to get closer, toward the north, keeping him on TA. At 6nm I still had the same tiny line, quite good solution anyway. And then Collins fired ! I fired two torpedoes, turned SE to evade and before hitting flank I did few pings to see where is the Collins runing to. I could see 2 his CMs giving his escape direction. Collins fired another fish when pinged.
The rest was simple .. I cleared the datum, resteered my torpedoes toward his escape direction and scored. His fishes harmlessly ate my CMs and wanished to the west. But hell .. if I didn't really look for the tiny line, I'd missed it for sure. Collins also does turns and it is really hard to TMA manually. He fired much sooner than I could. |
