@jasonsagert
if you alter the basic renown values you're cheating. What the Dark Side suggests is a way to get the full renown you would have got if you were playing at 100% realism. After all since you are actually sinking the ships why not take the renown as well. I would never ever suggest you take non-credited renown;) :D We might be dark but we're honest:p :smug: |
Ahh melnibonian, I see. Heck, I don't dable in any of that nonsense anyway--Ok, maybe I did back in the day. I enjoy messing with games when I first get them.
But, I must pose the question: What is "full" renown, and does one ever really deserve it? AHAHAHHA...do what you want with renown. I've decided to just stick with the GWX solution as I find that renown is involved in one of two things: 1) upgrades, which just make it easier--do you want a challange or do you want a arcade shooter? 2) medals and promotions--can you say ego? They only matter for your crew I guess, not for you at all. I like Ducimus's explaination for renown, and that's typically how I "role-play" it. Yea, I role-play my SH3 careers :lol: and I enjoy the hell out of doing so :up: J |
Mate I totally agree with you. I do not play at 100% realism but I don't also play an arcade game. I do role-play my career a lot and I do care about my crew and their wellfare. Now I do also agree that renown in SH3/GW/GWX has to do with upgrades and promotions. My argument with those are
1. Upgrades: Without renown you cannot upgrade your boat, something which is totally stupid in a real war situation. OK you might not get the latest radar or sonar the moment they're out of the factory, but you will get it soon enough. In GW/GWX/SH3 system as years go by it gets more and more difficult to upgrade your boat, something which is totally unrealistic. 2. Promotions: Promotions are linked to current renown and not tonnage, something that leads to the ridiculus argument 'should I get the latest sonar and torpedoes or wait one more patrol to get promoted?'. In my GW career I sunk almost 2,000,000 GWT (in 50-60% realism) throughout the war and I' ve end up as a Senior Lieutenant. The rank has totally no correlation whatsoever with the amount of damage I was doing to the Allies. These are the reasons I claim you should be getting full renown from the ships sunk. I was always a bit fan of the argument 'play the game as you like it and the way you have fun' that's why I joined the Dark Side;) :D |

melnibonian: I agree with you 100% on both points (and the third also ;)). I just wish that there was a better solution to the renown system as a whole--and the NYGM system addressed this, but doesn't fix the issue as a whole. Oh well, I desire a lot of things that just aren't.
Yep, I guess we'll have to deal with what we have. I know l'll have a lot of fun sinking ships anyway :up: Cheers, J |
I think that it would be better if you could get an upgrade only after the date avaliable and a certain amount of renown. The renown would not decrease when you received your upgrade. If renown references your popularity why should you lose popularity when you receive and upgrade? One minute your the hero the next your a goat.

The supermods turn me off in such a way like that as they change too much of the game towards how someone else feels you should be playing. |

Now consider the german situation for a moment. They're industries have been bombed to bits, their in a stranglehold on two front's, and logistical support was probably a utter nightmare. As the war dragged on, you betcha things got harder to aquire. The sad truth where militaries at wartime is concerned is you have to improvise and make due without things you wish you had or needed. That, is just a cold hard fact of life. It's applicable now, and im quite certain it was applicable then. I mean.. where in the hell do you think the term to "Jerry rig" came from? |
Actually....................................
http://www.wordcourt.com/archives.php?show=2004-03-10 "Jerry Rig" is a combination of "Jerry-built", which dates to the 1800s, and "Jury Rig", which is much older. The article doesn't mention it, but a slang dictionary I looked at gives a 1750s reference which states it's from the French "Jourier", which means "for-the-day" (as in "Soup du Jour"). |
actually......

I would put very little faith in any definition from the urban dictionary. Steve's source seems far more credible. ________ AlineX |
What did you think to get an answer out of this. Don't use it if it doesn;t
work for you. :nope: |
Meh. I don't care. Despite sources im pretty sure i have it correct.
Jerry was slang for german. Then there's Jerrycan's. (you can look that up on wiki if you want) Jerry-rigged is synomous with n*****-riged. Both mean the same thing, but ones infinitly more derragatory. Oddly enough, being bored on my commute to work, i sat there contemplating which term was introduced first. My conclusion was that i didn't really want to know. :lol: |
