If you don't like the default GWX water clarity you can alter it by an option in SH3Cmd. If you don't like this you can actually add Sober's 3D Waves Mod. Try these two. It's a shame not to play GWX because of such a trivial issue:D

tycho102 is right. You will get more upgrades later, when the time goes by. Changing the boat will also help.

Provided you want a simulator not an arcadish thing, that is how it was back then in 1939-1940: "monotonous and flat" collection of tonnage and medals. You will get more "action" in the game later on because Allied become better at it.
