nice display of doing an attack run. For me i have to have my sub showing :p

Wonder what specs your PC is Neal good to know if i should upgrade.

Main PC (im sure SHIV will run fine on this pc)
2.8ghz
2gigs ddr2 ram
geforce 7800gs 256mb

2nd PC (hoping SHIV will play on this as well for LAN game)
2.4ghz
1gig ddr333 ram
Geforce 6200 256mb

System specs: 4 year old Gateway, P 2.4Ghz, 1GB Ram, Radeon X1650 Pro. I am using a Samsung 931B 19" LCD monitor, res is 1280*1024. I have the gfx set about middle. My Radeon x1650 Pro has 512MB ram, I got it on sale a couple weeks ago at Circuit City for $120. I did run a beta on the same PC in Feb, with a Geforce 6600GT, with all the gfx options down it ran ok.

Not sure but I think the latter. If you check the video at 1:30, you can see when I'm on the bridge and the sub is riding the waves, I took a range with the target above the line and it looked right.

I don't think so, but I need to check that. There is an "attack map" with the torpedo track laid out, but I never used it in SH3 and wasn't looking for it in SH4.

Greyghost 03-21-07 10:14 AM

very nice video indeed.

Looks good to me there. With a lot of mods this could be pretty good.

Sturat 03-21-07 10:46 AM

Very nice!! Thank you for posting it. :yep:

Sailor Steve 03-21-07 10:47 AM

Lovely video, Neal. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the attack set-up.

Well, I am that good, but he needs the practice, so I let him do all the set-ups.

Thanks again for the show.

Also how accurate is range finding? How much do you have to guess? I recall the stadimeter in SH3 being rather buggy (I say recall since I haven't touched it in a while).

That is how it functioned in real life. Read here under periscope controls. The nice thing about this system is even in heavy seas, both the real and the ghost image move together, you'll get a much more accurate range.

Who enlisted Gollum?

Thats the great thing about the position keeper on the TDC; if you are accurate on your range and AOB, speed is the only thing remaining. If the position keeper information doesn't match the bearing you are seeing in your scope, then your guess on speed is off. Make another adjustment and try another observation in a few minutes to check the position keeper again.

wow this is bad when the screen shot thread is poking fun at the game glitchs...

AOB just takes practice, the more you do it, the better you get. Manual targeting takes practice, they didn't send skippers to sea until they spent weeks in a simulator.

This is it in a nutshell. Eventually, given enough experience of firing torps at the bad guys you begin to gain a certain amount of instinct for most of the measurements: Ship speed, distance, AOB....you know a dirty, rusty old maru isn't going to be tanking around the ocean like a destroyer trying to get home before the rum ration runs out so you can make educated guesses and work out the likely speed. I'm sure in real life all the good skippers knew from being in that same situation time and time again, and although it isn't a guide for getting 100% kills, I think you get to a point when worrying about every little change in your calculations becomes more trouble that it is worth. Although knowing the basics is, of course, invaluable, that instinct becomes every bit as important.

Of course, Getting as close as possible to the target helps as well.:D

Thanks for the video, Neal, it was very instructive.

Thats probably why all those pictures before release had subs surfacing in front of Japaneese Battleships, destroyers and what not.
