With heavy heart I send condolences to all here, and to Dave's family. As for you Dave, I can only say -rest well my friend for the struggles are over.

I'm stunned by this. Not what I was expecting to see when I checked in tonight. My condolences to his friends and family. His loss will not go unnoticed nor forgotten.

Everybody dies. Not everybody lives. Dave lived.

We've been missing you Dave. We'll continue to miss you. See you on the flip side... have some cold brews waiting for us.

Another day and night without you buddy, rest well and I'll see you in the sunrise.

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

23The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green [1] pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest [2] my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

God be with you....and with you family.

Any donations in excess of the cost of the plaque will be donated to charity in Dave's name.

What kind of charity? How about some thoughts on that? Red Cross, or maybe some heart foundation, or USS Cavalla foundation, or ... ? I can also ask Francisco if he has a preferance. I think an appropriate 501c org of some type.

Neal

I will go with Francisco pref first and then, well have a poll would be best

Roger that, I've asked Francisco if he would advise. I'm sure he reads this forum, but in case not, I've forwarded all your condolences, guys.

Thank you, Neal.

Such a sad thing to come back to in the new year. Leo was a truly great person who gave his time for the benefit of others while he knew that his time was limited. What more can be said but thankyou my friend, you will certainly be missed.

-If all humans were of the same caliber as Leovampire, the world would be a much better place.

Who Loved So Well (A sailor's eulogy)

We sailed the sea by oceans light,
Around the horn through restless night.
Our course and luck did make it right
To see things new in strange delight.

The seas were harsh and took their toll
With branded flesh and tortured soul,
And when at last the sun sat low,
It touched the earth with blood red glow.

Silver breakers plight our trough
To sails unfurled and winds aloft.
Spirits soar on breezes free
That bear the souls of sailors, we.

Hear our prayer, oh Lord our God;
We lived to serve and wield thy rod.
Though wretches we, and racked with flaws,
We are the ones who fought thy cause.

Now bleached white bones on foreign sands,
Attest the toll in far off lands
For those who heard their country's call;
Brave sailors each, who came to fall.

Remember those who served on ships,
And bid farewell on endless trips
Across the seas to Timbuktu,
And lived and died; these chosen few.

We ask this Lord, for those so true,
And honor bound beneath skies blue,
Who served and died for freedom's hand
To hold and cherish this, your land.

A sailor's death on ships of sleep
With few to know and none to weep
For faith so brave, a soul to keep;
A silent grave in oceans deep.

And when the end has come at last,
And unfilled shadows heaven casts,
Remember we who served and fell,
And to the hosts of heaven tell;
Bring home my boys who loved so well.

Godspeed and farewell Dave. You may have been in the Army, but you were a sailor at heart.

Soul of a Submariner by John Chaffey.

He cast his soul to the wind, and let his spirit free.

And his life was set on course, with a submarine decree.

Society had many rules, no way he would live by.

No commuting to an office, no wearing suit and tie.

No time to conform, no time for kids and wife.

The sea was to be his home, the service was his life.

If only he could tell, of the sights that he had seen.

Of the seas that he had sailed, on that fine old submarine.

But his tales will go untold, because of history past.

Of lessons paid in blood, the "Silent Service" it was cast.

Though the days drift into years, the memories do not fade.

Of good boats and tough missions, and the sacrifices made.

Of Silver Dolphins and great shipmates, and moonless dark sea nights.

Of travel to exotic lands, and many bewildering sites.

O’ to hear the claxon sound, his friends they do not know.

He prays to once again, go where Submariners go.

Each year he grows more restless, the salt flows through his veins.

But the depths are for the young, not the old with many pains.

His heart beats with a fever, his mind drifts to the sea.

He knows the taste of liberty, and what it costs to be free.

He will hear the vents no longer, he will go to sea no more.

For his final set of orders, has cast his soul ashore.

RIP Dave, on eternal patrol...

He is one of the most dedicated men I have ever worked with! and helped the ROW-team by allways setting the bar for high solutions to everything he worked with.

His death has come as a very sad thing and at the moment I don't know if the ROW-team will continue now that he is gone. Originaly I started ROW with Dave because we thought there was room for improvement on Silent hunter 4 and with Dave's entusiasm and ideas this mod has become one of the biggest mod I have ever worked on.

Same here. My involvement with ROW was a simple PM request from Dave to help with testing new work he planned to release. Little I did i realize at the time that that would lead to so much more than either I or him could ever imagine. He always kept his standards high and always pushed me to do better. Such a sad, sad loss for this community... I didn't realize he was so young until he told me he was a veteran of the Gulf War. So sad, dying so young...

I'm not very good at words at times like this, so let me offer these to express my condolances to Dave, his family, and all his friends at the Radioroom.

NAVY HYMN

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

(Submariner verses of the Navy Hymn)

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be,
Protect each one we ask of thee.
Bless those at home who wait and pray,
For their return by night and day.

Lord God, our power evermore,
Whose arm doth reach the ocean floor,
Dive with our men beneath the sea;
Traverse the depths protectively.
O hear us when we pray, and keep
Them safe from peril in the deep.

Update – 08 Jan, 2008
* Special note: Dave is gone now, having finally lost the battle with the many ailments that plagued him. Let it be known that, even as his body was failing him, he never once complained, nor did he ever feel sorry for himself. Instead, he plunged ahead with his project, “Reflections on the Water,” with reckless abandon, as if he knew his time on Earth could be cut short at a moment’s notice. His efforts transformed his beloved game, “Silent Hunter 4,” into something majestic and breathtaking, and in doing so, touched the lives of so many around him in such a positive manner. His quiet strength of character and positive outlook was an inspiration to us all. Whether or not he realized this does not matter, for true heroes never envision themselves as such.

Dave was a true hero.

And he never gave up.

Very nice Captain. I concur wholeheartedly with the sentiment. We'll miss you Dave.

How can I just let you walk away?
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh.
You're the only one who really knew it all.

How can you just walk away from me?
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all.

So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Well take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face

I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry!
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why..
You're the only one who really knew me at all.

Just the memory of your face.
Well take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
But to wait for you, is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face.

Take a good look at me now!
Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've got to take.

Take a look at me now...
