Hmm, but why would steam come out of the ballast scuttles?

flintlock 02-18-07 04:04 PM

I have no idea, it's just a guess.

My assumption is based on the area in and around there may have some piping or other components that may get hot. That's a pretty large area that gets flooded, isn't it?

Anyone here able to shed some light on this?

I remember musing, not even seriously, about how awesome it'd be if there was cooling water running out of a hole in the submarine, like in reality's boats and ships. I think it was Neal who replied with something like, "yeah, and water running off of the hull. Maybe in a next generation sub sim. Hoping I'm alive to see it". Well, that's one hope coming true, as he's to the best of my knowledge... still alive;).

Reminds me about how, in the days of the 1,4MB floppy disks, I joked about a future where disks were the size of a stamp. Of course it'd be impossible - you'd lose them in an instant - but it was fun to imagine nonetheless. That was in the nineties. Already today, in 2007, we've got those stamp-sized floppy disks - also known as 1 GB memory chips. Very handful for us digital camera users.

Dunno if you've seen this one?
*edit...it's already on page1....but this one's on higher resolution. :D

I don't think so. Foaming water is one of the hardest things to recreate graphically, along with proper flames. The outer hull is hollow, and water runs out of those scuttles (I'm not sure that's the proper term for them) all the time. I think they're just trying to make it look more real, and doing the best they can.

You're probably right. It does seem like something that would be a challenge to model well. I guess I just have a vivid imagination.

I think the only place that steam would be generated would be around the exhaust ports of the diesels while on the surface. I know of nothing (machinery, piping, etc) forward of those that would cause steam to be generated from wave action.

I'll check my library for more info.

Just FYI....:ping:

Did anyone notice the new sprites which are evidently going to be attached to the flooding holes? :hmm:

They look unfinished right now, but they could look very cool in the end!

There was a discussion in another thread about it. I was convinced it was a steam, mist and water mixture -- but those in the know suggest just water. Agreed though, looks promising.

They could be vents :hmm:

I know these screenies are from an incomplete game.

However, regardless of the fact that I don't know the forward speed of the surfacing boat (above), there doesn't seem to be much/enough water disturbance around the sub at all.

Wouldn't the conning tower produce 'white water' as it breached the surface? Also, what about the bow wave and subsequent water disturbance along the entire length of the hull?

It just seems a little too 'clean'.:88)

Schunken 02-19-07 08:03 AM

I think the boat on zhaz screen surface at very low forward speed...this can be the reason for not see "whitewater" at the tower and the forward parts.....;)

That's what I thought, however, looking through this link - http://www.marinesims.de/site/silent...-4/sh4-34.html I still don't see much in the way of water disturbance.

Does anyone have a screenie of a SH4 Sub surfacing or surfaced and running at speed?

Sulikate 02-19-07 09:32 AM

Man, this transparent water effect is.. AMAZING:D
