https://www.hmdb.org/Photos3/383/Photo383262.jpg:yeah::arrgh!: Reaaly weird: one of my ATM techs actually served on the USS Hawkbill(666) which he referred to as "the devilfish"! Apparently submariners all have the same sense of decidedly fatalistic irreligious humor: U-666's first conning tower emblem https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pic...943395&thumb=1as opposed to my own avatar (#2https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/ima...ine=1388545797): sunk with all hands: Feb 10,1944

Its the wrong thread, but the Hawkbill used to moor just a couple of spots down the pier from the Bremerton and I got to know some of her crew.

The popular story those guys liked to tell (I give it 50/50 odds that it was true) involved a sailor who got a postcard from his old Minister from back home. He was visiting Honolulu and wondered if he could get a tour of the guy's sub. The sailor got approval from the command for a (non nuclear) tour of the boat and met his old Minister at the main gate. He walked the Minister down to SUBASE and then out to the pier.

The first thing the Minister notices is the 666 on the gang plank. The sailor shows him how to come down the ladder and takes the Minister to Control to show him around. The next thing the Minister sees is a placard near sonar that says DEMON. In another corner he sees another placard next to the navigation hardware that says SINS. At that point the Minister decided to take his chances topside and left the boat. :har:

I just did some math on my alma mater, and their tuition has grown almost double the rate of inflation since I went there. I thought it was full of rich kids THEN, in the '80s!!! God knows what it's like NOW!!!

Oh, here are the numbers (adjust for inflation):

44K per year when I went there

80K per year now

Who can afford this!?!?!?

The cost of university/college these days is INSANE.

Just during the span of my time attending a public state-affiliated university the cost went up just over 15k per year between my first and last year.

I was fortunate to escape with very little in the way of student loans but others are not so lucky. At least with the school I went to, it's 90% STEM types so almost everybody is able to get a higher than average paying job.

Yeah, the unis know they will get Uncle Sam to foot the bill when the stoodents can't get the act together. I had $30,000 of student debt in 2010 on my hospitality degree. Even though I only worked as a hotel manager for a little over a year, the decision to get that degree was mine, so therefore so was the debt. It took about 4 years but it wasn't that onerous to pay off.

Btw, good to see you again, John.:Kaleun_Salute:

Maybe - but you'll note that I correctly inserted a comma after the word 'coffee'... Sailor Steve would have approved :)

A semicolon (;) ie: a 'longer pause' than a mere comma, would have been more appropriate in connecting the utterly dissimilar concepts of 'probable coffee' with my Anglo-saxon 'mate-neß'!:haha::yep::know: :Kaleun_Goofy:

Eichhörnchen 10-02-22 03:38 PM

No no - a semicolon is used when you wish to expand upon the immediate subject and want to avoid using a full stop. Certainly it denotes a longer pause than is usual with a comma, but it's intended to keep us focused on the same subject

hey there fellow skippers. im reintroducing myself as its been over a year since i last booted up Silent Hunter. Currently im on SH4 as i wanted to play in the Pacific. i came across SUBSIM looking for mods to enhance SH5 and installed WOS, which i find to be a great megamod. im relearning everything again in SH4 and am enjoying the challenge.

i play mostly sims and strategy games but i do like the more mainstream games like Call of Duty as well. i'm hoping to make some friends here and have a good time with all of us. anyways, just wanted to say hi.

good hunting, skippers.

Eichhörnchen 12-11-22 05:06 AM

Welcome back, Schizo - I've played through all the FPS stuff myself (all time favourite has always been Battlefield Bad Company 2) - got a few screenies on my profile page

This is a great place to hang out (General Topics) but you'll find all the help you'll ever need for the technical stuff in the different forums here someplace
