I wanted to add this for the General. Rough weather is just that with LBO in this mod. My S class was getting swamped! I was actually in a two wave trough rock'in and a'reeling. No worries on waves, they are there and you will know when it is time to submerge and ride it out at 150 feet down! |
I don't ask for much, do I? Lol!
Thanks Warhawk and thanks guys! The seas look fantastic in every way! The quilting is the reason the camera ceiling was set so low, but nevermind, it's a small price to pay.
I just wanted to ask, in reference to the photos of real storm waves (Thanks Momo55), I notice that the real ship pitches and rolls alot more than the models in SH4, so much so that the crew find themselves looking at nothin' but ocean on the way down the face of a wave. Even huge oil tankers experience this in really big seas. Is it possible to make the Sub model pitch and roll a bit more? It always struck me as a bit too stable in the game. The 3D characters are actually animated to be thrown around the interior, under duress (usually heavy depth-charging), it'd be nice to see that happen with heavy sea-states too. They look a bit like this: :rotfl: Except they don't look as thrilled about it. |
LOL The General
There is actualy a way to get the sub to react a little more without changing the ocean effect's and that is by lowering the sub's max surface depth by 1 ft that is all it takes. So if everyone changed their Sub files to lower the sub's max surface depth by a foot the movment would be greatly increased.

Pimp My Ride!
That's terrific Leo, thanks! How does one go about lowering the sub by 1 foot? Forgive my ignorance, what you guys can do so effortlessly, looks like Voodoo to me!
 |
okay you have to do this
and I sugest doing it as a mod so you do not screw up the original game file's and can disable it anytime you want.
Go to the Submarine Folder then to the sub folder you want to change open up the sub's CFG file using word pad we will use the gato as an example. it will look like this when you open it and the line I highlighted in yellow is the line that needs to be changed: [Unit] ClassName=SSGato 3DModelFileName=data/Submarine/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato HumanPlayable=YES Interior=data/Interior/NSS_Gato/NSS_Gato UnitType=200 MaxSpeed=21 MaxSpeedSubmerged=9 Length=95 Width=8.3 RenownAwarded=130 [Salvo] 1=1,3,2,4 2=1,2,4 3=1,3,4 4=1,4 5=2,3 6=1,3 7=2,4 [Properties] PeriscopeDepth=18.3;meters SnorkelDepth=15;meters CrashDepth=40;meters MaxDepth=100;meters SurfaceDepth=4.5;meters TorpLaunchMaxDepth=30;meters StormConditions=9,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] [EngineProperties] AllStop=0.00 AheadSlow=0.40 AheadOneThird=0.57 AheadStandard=0.80 AheadFull=0.94 AheadFlank=1.00 BackSlow=-0.26 BackStandard=-0.40 BackFull=-0.53 BackEmergency=-0.66 I hope that helps you out doing it yourself The General I suck at doing conversions so I cheat and use the internet and type in something like Convert meters to feet and then type in the numbers in the lines to find out what I need to change them to. I just checked and the conversion would be for a 1 ft change it to 4.2 meters instead of 4.5 4.5 meters comes out to 14.763 feet and seeing you want to lower it about a foot you need 13.763 which is rounded off 4.2 meters |
Thanks Dave!

Your welcome The General
Just remember it may be harder to recharge batteries in the ruff sea's even with just a 1ft depth change but you will get more movment out of the sub when travling through the 15 mps wind and wave states using the LBO mod.

Making this change would make the boat roll/pitch w/ the seas instead of sitting "stable" |
It dosn't sit stable what are you talking about chopped50ford
My sub moves through the waves perfectly all of them do for me he just wanted it to seem like the waves were larger than they are in effect's. I just didn't do it to the ocean so it wouldn't sink anything travling on it.
If you look at the pictures people have posted you can see the waves comming over the Bow and stern of the Sub's in high sea's as they crash through the waves. |

See by lowering the sub a foot the waves have more
of the hull to grab hold of and so you get more movment out of the sub like when you surface and the Ballest tanks still are pumping out the water and keeping the sub lower in the water until it reaches full surface depth.

In a nut shell??? Not complaining but trying to clarify what Im reading..
the boat moves (pitches fwd/aft, port/stbd) more in heavier seas w/ this slight 1' change.
Like a row boat in a Sea State 5 storm. If you try to row, you wont get anywhere. Also, LBO adds current doesnt it? I notice in most cases, the rudder is pitched over 1-4 degree's (Port/Stbd) to stay on course. Leo, dont get me wrong, im not complaining, just clarifying. I love this mod, just trying to understand it more. :hmm: :D "4.5 meters comes out to 14.763 feet and seeing you want to lower it about a foot you need 13.763 which is rounded off 4.2 meters" - Doesnt this raise the boat out of the water? Shouldnt the change move towards 4.7/4.8? I just checked mine (Tambor Class) and its set at 4.7752 |

i'm not sure what exactly determines the point when a ship is taking damage or sinks in rough seas or what ships are mostly affected by it (i guess small ones like sampans and gunboats?) - but would it be possible to try and fix the issue from the other side: make those ships more resilient in rough seas? after i'm done with the particles and the final camera adjustments i think i'll take a look at that, too :) |

Dunno if this is the right spot for this, but...
...the muzzle flash needs to be greatly beefed up, compared to what we have now. This is a shot of the Missouri firing her 5" guns in 1944:
http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS..._night_pic.jpg And Wichita: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS...ichita_pic.jpg Compare that to what we have now, and I think it's pretty apparent the current muzzle flash is pretty pathetic. It'd be great to see this improved. |
Lots more powder behind those shells I believe. Powder type and volume have a massive effect on it.
I am a 5" fire controlman in the USN and the types we use now leaves just a bunch of smoke. Of course I have never seen a picture of a sub's deckgun in action so I could be talking out of my ass. :rotfl: OT pic/example http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...n54_firing.jpg This is what I get to do for a living....neener neener. |
