Where did you install the game? If it was the default "C:/Program Files/" etc., or the 64 bit default folder, then yeah you have a problem. As part of the security features of Vista (and Win 7), you can't make changes to files inside those folders, especially Windows system files like .ini. If this is what you did, you have three options:

1 - Uninstall the game, then reinstall someplace else. It can be any other place on your C drive, or even better a second hard drive. Wherever you install to, as long as it's not the default "Program Files" folder, you can then edit the file.

2 - Turn off User Account Control. This should fix it, but I'm not positive. It will make your computer less secure though.

3 - Right click on the original file, or the folder it's in, or even the "Ubisoft" folder itself, then click on the "Security" tab. Then click the "Edit" button for the permissions, select each listed "Group or user names" and check the "Full Control" box. After doing all the groups, click "Apply." This should allow the file to be edited.

I really recommend you do #1 if at all possible. It solves all sorts of problems, and doesn't screw anything else up.

Thanks

As you guessed it is in the default location so in the Program Folder (64bit) and that is giving me the problem.

As soon as I have finished up this patrol I am on I will uninstall and reinstall on a second hard drive that I have attached to the PC.

What if I for the time being just move the SH4 folder out of the Program Folder? Can I drag this to the other hard drive or will I break something if I do that?

Thanks again for you help... looking forward to getting radio workin on my sub.

Bull,
you can drag it to say C:\Program Files (x86)\.. but you will need to either create a shortcut on your desktop or use the one already there to change the start options Just right click the shortcut and select properties then select the shortcuts tab and change the dialogue boxes nest to target and start in: to reflect the drive and folders you moved it to.

Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\sh4.exe"

Start in: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific"

where it was originally D:\Program Files\..\..\ i just changed the D to C and added the (x86) and it works fine

Or just drag the "Ubisoft" folder.

I didn't even think of that method.

Thanks - I will try this tonight if I can (after coaching 7 year olds at soccer if I still have the energy) and let you know if it works....

You're best bet for trying this is either create a "Games" folder on the C drive, and drag "Ubisoft" there, or just drag "Ubisoft" to a second hard drive, then whichever you do, update the links in the shortcut to where the game is now. You don't want to drag the whole "Program Files" folder as it'll move everything in it and you don't want or need to do that.

Fred - I'm in need of your expertise.

I have an event in OGG format that causes a CTD whenever the specified event date/time arrives. The file is saved in mono and I've triple-checked to ensure the trigger matches the file name. Any other ideas as to what could be causing the crash?

Is this from one of my stations, or something else?

Does the file play outside SH4? It could be a bit corrupted. I've had mp3s that would play fine externally, but were messed up in the game. Try converting it to .wav or an mp3, then fix your trigger to the new extension. If that doesn't work, double check your entire events.ini file and make sure it's date/time is not out of sequence. If you have the Radio Station Manager, it will tell you that.

If none of this works, post your trigger, if possible the whole events.ini. A fresh set of eyes sometimes helps.

No, this is one of my own creations. I know better than to mess with your masterpieces :DL

It plays fine outside SH4 but trying as a new extension is a great idea. I'll start there.

Thanks for the offer - I'll let you know!

I appreciate you taking the time to help me troubleshoot this issue! It's been frustrating...

I've uploaded a huge set of Country Music songs. See the first post for details.

I'm also working on getting some Chinese music. It occured to me we should have a Chinese station too. So far I only have modern versions of traditional Chinese music, but I'm hoping to find some period pieces too.

It appears BtS Mods is gone. I'm getting an "Account suspended" message when I go there.

If it is indeed gone, and stays gone, I think I'm going to try uploading my stuff on Mediafire. I'll have to redo the compression on everything because their limit on free accounts is 200 MB file sizes, but I know they won't be concerned about the music, and I don't like having them in just one place.

But for now, if you want the music files, they're only at Silenthunter Mods.

joea 11-15-10 08:49 AM

Drat, noticed that this morning. Was registered and there was lots of really good stuff there. :damn:

Hope you can get your stuff uploaded elswhere as well as at Silenthunter mods.

Have you considered putting them up here at Subsim Downloads?

I would love to, but Neal can't handle the traffic of the big stuff.

Sailor Steve 11-15-10 03:37 PM

My 'Loading Screens' mod is 250 MB compressed, and it's there. Are your radio files bigger than that? Neal does have a server that should handle it.

I have stuff that, all together, is in the GB range. In all I've got just over 50 GB total. Add in multiple downloads a month for all that, and it adds up quick.

And is MUCH appreciated Kind Sir !

Have been using your stuff since my first patrol many moons ago..... and is one of the first things added after any re-install.
Thanks again, and be Well !!!!

fred8615 11-19-10 11:45 AM

After thinking it over, I've decided to go ahead and upload my stuff to Mediafire. See the first post for the link. Just the music files are up right now. I'm in the process of uploading the radio stations now.

I also decided to use the pay option. This way I don't have to redo all my files to a 200 MB size, which is the limit for their free service, and you the downloader don't get any ads to deal with. The only potential problem is that for the pay service, you get a limited amount of bandwidth each month, and you have to pay for any GB you go over that month. But it appears it's only a few cents per GB, and any unused bandwidth from one month rolls over to the next, so I think I can handle it. If not, I can just cancel the paid account and redo as a free one. It has unlimited bandwidth, but you have the ads on that option.

BTW, you may notice I've removed the "mirroring" files from the first post. Since I've uploaded them here, there's no need to mirror them anymore. So I won't be uploading them to Mediafire as well.

Budds 11-19-10 08:40 PM

Still one nagging little aside......

Was anyone ever able to get the sim to read the music files from another location...... ya know, Sim = C:\SH4 .... But music files are located @ H:\Music ?

I have a pretty big Music/News collection and would like to have it in a central location, like an external hard-drive.
My radio folder is just over 20 gigs now, and I would like to add another 20 gigs or so but hate the idea that my SH4 install eats so much space.
Plus alot of the music/shows I have are also used for common listening pleasure, so I have most of it duplicated on my external HD where I point my media player to for background music around the house.... waste of space IMHO.

In any case.....
Thanks Again for your efforts here Fred !
(And Greets from Tallahassee Florida.... Almost Neighbors ! ;))

fred8615 11-22-10 09:57 AM

I've got most of the radio stations uploaded now. At this writing I'm uploading the KPO station, and after it I'll just have the KOTR station left.

Budds:

I think I did try your suggestion awhile back, and it didn't work. It's simple enough to test though. Just change the link in this line of a station's listing in the radio.ini file:

Folder=Washington

...to wherever you want to put your files.

But as I said, I don't think it works.
