I had no problems at all with 1.1 and I have now gone back to that instead of 1.2 and no crashes at all again.

I tried lowering the resolution to 1024 x 768, looked crap on a 22" widescreen but still got random CTD's

Anyone with similar problems?

You sound just like me ....

I have defraged the HD, upped the cache, and reinstalled SHiV and then applied the 1.2 patch. I have never once managed to get more than 4 days into a mission before it just cuts out on me and CTD.

Any advice on a cache setting for a 1gig system?

Thanks,

Is anyone else finding that the crew starts calling out random numbers every half-second or so? I just got this problem today.

It is the game protection, random numbers, 2d crews, and perhaps other hidden effects. The fade protection.

1.2 installed and I can now watch it freeze to a complete stop just like before. Just like 1.0 and 1.1. Absolutely no difference at all. Freeze happens almost at once. Forces a reboot. Totally worthless.

what are your system specs and do you have all the latest drivers.

I have but one question for patch 1.2

Is the FSAA automatic, or is there a check box I need to search for, because I see nothing about it on my options menu, also, the resolution menu didn't change at all

"... Any advice on a cache setting for a 1gig system?..."

1.5 times your installed memory is what MS suggests and that has worked for me for years. If you decide to create a fixed cache, make sure you do it with a defragged HD and the cache will stay defragged.

Now, if you want a performance enhancement, create the cache on a non-C hard drive (another hardware mechanism, not just another partition on the same drive) and Windows will be able to R/W cache and deliver OS and files functionality at the same time. When the cache is on your C drive, the head has to move more to manage cache and game file access causing long load times for large files.

"Windows" managed cache is a dynamic cache in that it shrinks and grows as needed by the system. Although this works OK for people with very small hard drives (this is a holdover from win98 days) it causes a lot of fragmenting due to the swap file constantly changing size. Typically when XP installs, it inspects your system and sets a size near the ideal 1.5 ratio and unless your system changes, this cache doesn't really change much (if at all) so it's debatable if messing with the cache size on XP with low mem systems really helps that much. Getting it moved onto another drive DOES help a lot though whatever your configuration. If you are getting low memory alerts, fix your cache. If not, you may not want to mess with it unless you are sure what you are doing.

For what it's worth, getting your machine bumped up to 2 gigs is the best thing you can do to help demanding games besides an expensive Vidcard. If your installed RAM is a little slow (by todays standards 400 MHz or less is slow) then this would be a good opportunity to get two gigs of faster RAM rather than just add more of the same speed.

Dammit! I bought the bloody game from a store. If there's one thing I absolutely HATE, it's getting treated as a criminal when I've done nothing wrong. I mean if they must have copy protection the least they should do - the very least - is make sure it works properly and doesn't inconvenience legitimate users. If they can't do that, then they shouldn't use copy protection and they should take their chances. Heck, bung another couple of dollars on the price to offset the loss in revenue - anything. Just give me a game that when I pay for it it plays and doesn't make me out to be a thief.

If a specific game is not swapping you to disk, more ram will simply sit there unused while you play. However, SH4 will definately be swapping quite a bit on 1G, and even a bump to 1.5G will help you a lot. I find the game footprint to be 1.2G on XP Pro.

Any speed of Ram is better than the fastest disk. You have to make a judgement call on replacing all your ram to upgrade its speed.

If you are stuck with 1G for whatever reason, as your question implies, then -Pv-'s advice on setting your swap is very good.

Try a different resolution to fix the TBT.

Thanks for the excellent response (from you and the others) ....

I infact placed an order yesterday for 2 gigs, Matched sticks of Coursair XMS Twinx2048-3200C2. It seems that Corsair brand works the best on my particular board (Asus A7N8X-E) and from reading up on the forums there it seems this pair works well. It seems by spec it can take somewhat faster ram but many people were reporting bad errors and when installing this had no issues.

Thanks again - I really would like to be able to play this game.

It must be forced through your video card control center.
Nvidia has a option to choose AA either by "Application Controlled" or by 2x, 4x, 8x,
You do not want to choose application controlled and must select either 2x, 4x, or whatever your video card control panel offers. The higher the better but also the higher the more impact it has on frame rate.
Hope this helps..

I also have this problem, same also a 7800 (GTX though I think).

D.

DragonRR1 04-24-07 08:53 AM

Again thanks, I'll be posting an updated list later on today. Issue 11 is being removed and I've updated issue 31) to cover the whole transparency problem.

In addition I am including a query section: (any help would be appreciated!)

Query:

Can anyone confirm that item 61) is actually a bug?

Issue 38) Fix the radar and sonar,... There are other issues which refer to this 2) 19) 67) and 68).. Can someone provide a detailed explanation on what needs fixing that isn’t covered (if anything)?

If anyone knows of any workarounds or mods which fix any of the issues above please provide links and I’ll include them in the next (exciting instalment)

@Hans Schultz: ASUS P4S800D-X, Pent 4 3Ghz, GeForce 6800, SBAudigy, 2GB system Ram. Very latest drivers installed for GeForce 6800 and SBAudigy.

With the very latest drivers, the game will now let me play around in Sub School but I still get the freezes. Usually when I am sitting at an AA gun or looking through the attack periscope. I have ONLY tried the Sub School so far since I don't intend to do anything else without stopping the freezes. They are the same freezes that force a complete reboot. :dead:
