Because it's a patriarchal system, one with a defined and immutable hierarchy where some types of beings are automatically considered more valuable/capable than others (except in rare cases where the supposedly "lower" lifeform is willing to serve the system in some extraordinary fashion). The established paradigm for all relationships in such a system is one of dominance and submission (rather than equality of status and cooperation) with the dominant half or any pair being given - or rather taking - that role based on some arbitrary difference between itself and the other half, which is expected to submit by default. The difference could be one of sex, race, religion, species... doesn't matter. In such a system the entirety of existence is divided into those who say "jump" and those who say "how high?" - and in many cases, an individual will be expected to play one role with his/her "inferiors" but revert to the other with his/her "superiors."

Although this is not, AFAIK, dealt with specifically in terms of the devaluation of women as a sex, it's certainly apparent in the Empire's treatment of non-humanoid life forms and its overvaluation of the technological at the expense of the organic (technology vs. nature) which is almost always symbolic shorthand for a masculine vs. feminine dynamic.

Then how come all the Women and Aliens in the Empire serve in the Highest Echelons of the Military?

If you encounter a Woman in the Imperial Military she will be in command of a ship, fighter squadron or ground unit. Guaranteed.

Again any Alien you encounter in the Imperial Military will be of a high rank.

Notice how there are no Alien or Female Sargents or Warrant Officers or Enlisted of any kind.

Everyone working on the bridge, fighting in the mud or scrubbing the deck is a man (or a Droid) in the Empire.

Considering I'm discussing Star Wars vs. Star Trek with a confirmed female I think I'm doing alright. :03:

Extended Universe is super geek stuff that is completely different from the movie series. :O: In the movies, (you know, what really counts), I personally can't recall of ever seeing a female in the empire.

Except when GL steals something from it... like say Coruscant... If it wasn't for Tim Zahn we would still be calling it the "Imperial Planet"
